What a way to begin Sickle Cell Awareness Month!

After an incredible Saturday in Monroe—filled with education, conversation, questions, stories, and a SOLD-OUT table—Cookies and Bananas: A Far Cry from Child’s Play is headed to Dallas, Texas!

This Saturday, I’ll be at the Sickle Cell Awareness Health Fair Expo, where the community can come together for health education, resources, onsite screening, a blood drive, shopping—and yes, a Cookies and Bananas book signing! 💙

Cookies and Bananas began more than 30 years ago with one little girl, one concerned mother, and a simple explanation involving cookies and bananas.

Today, that explanation is traveling.

EDUCATION → CONVERSATION → ACTION

Learn about sickle cell disease and sickle cell trait.
Talk about it with your family.
Know your status.
Ask questions.
Advocate for yourself and the people you love.

This is why I keep talking about sickle cell. 💙

Saturday reminded me that people really do want to understand. Sometimes they simply need someone to start the conversation.

During our discussion, people asked questions. They shared stories. We talked about sickle cell disease, sickle cell trait, knowing your status, advocating for yourself and your children, and what it means for families.

One of the things that stayed with me was hearing someone talk about a childhood friend who had sickle cell. As children, they didn’t understand why he sometimes couldn’t come out and play. His mother didn’t talk about his condition, so the other children simply didn’t know.

That is exactly why conversation matters.

More than 30 years ago, I had a two-year-old little girl who needed to understand why she hurt and what was happening inside her body. I couldn’t give her a medical lecture. I had to meet her where she was.

So I gave her cookies and bananas. 🍪🍌

Today, that simple explanation has become a children’s book—but the mission is much bigger than a book.

Education → Conversation → Action.

Learn.
Ask questions.
Know your status.
Talk to your family.
Teach your children in ways they can understand.
Advocate.

We cannot change what we don’t talk about.

And during Sickle Cell Awareness Month, I’m committed to keeping the conversation going. 💙

This last month has been adventurous. I’m learning and growing everyday. These are scenes of my work life after 1/23/23. Notice I said work life, because life itself has many moving sets and subsets. One doesn’t stop because the other is still rolling. And please don’t fall for the old ‘your life must have balance' trick either! Balance in its simplest form means equal on both sides. There is no way to place the same about of time, attention, effort, and energy all at the same time to each set and subset of life. The key is to ask God to navigate and trust Him through the process. Lord I sure do need You for this next level.
