A good dive buddy is not the most skilled person on the boat. It is the most predictable one.

Predictable gear setup. Predictable pacing. Predictable communication. That consistency lowers cognitive load and keeps attention where it belongs.

The wrong buddy turns a dive into work before it starts. The right one makes the dive calm, efficient, and honest.

There is a difference between a sloppy diver and a dangerous one.

Bad visibility hides mistakes. It also exposes mindset. A diver who wanders off plan, ignores signals, and measures safety only by remaining gas is not unlucky or inexperienced. They are unaware. That is worse.

Confidence does not protect you from consequences. Awareness does. Team discipline does. Respect for boundaries does. When someone shows you how they behave when conditions tighten, believe them.

Totally makes sense that my first dive at Three Oaks in 2026 is on a ’s “after work” dive where I run into one of my original dive buddys Ian. Also now a local Divemaster.

Ian is acknowledged in the back of my book The First Breath as being instrumental in being a good buddy in my first year of diving.

Many divers stop local diving once the card is issued.

Here in Chicagoland, local quarries are not exciting. Visibility is inconsistent. Gear is bulkier. That is exactly why it matters. Quarry and cold water remove the easy mode that warm water hides behind. Small weighting errors show up immediately. Trim problems cost effort. Sloppy kicks become your entire environment.

Warm water is for enjoyment. Local cold water is for maintenance. If your fundamentals hold there, they hold anywhere.

Certification proves you passed once. It does not prove you can perform when conditions shift.

Real dives are where skills are used, not built. If you wait for a problem to practice, you are already behind.

Hovering without drift. Clean gas checks under task load. Switching to a backup without breaking trim. Deploying a DSMB when you do not have to. That quiet repetition is what turns knowledge into ownership.

The water does not care about your card. It responds to what you can actually do.

Practice when nobody is watching. That is where reliability is earned.

Most divers think progression follows certifications or number of dives, but in practice it doesn’t work that way. Divers improve in stages.

I’ve started rolling out a Stages system across Dive Otter to reflect how development actually happens, organizing skills around control, awareness, and decision making.

It’s a simple shift, but it changes how you think about what matters next.
