Hoʻāla students wore their fanciest attire for today’s Queen’s Jubilee Jam luncheon. We celebrated the 70-year reign of Queen Elizabeth II, the longest reigning monarch of the UK. Students were treated to a variety of afternoon tea sandwiches, sweet cakes and pastries, lemonade, and even a few extra treats of Wotsits and Quavers.
To Lori Fukuoka, 3rd and 4th Grade teacher from her students:
- You are the best teacher ever
-You are the best teacher in the whole wide world!
-Thank you for helping me with my work
-Thank you for helping me learn so I can be a good adult
-Thank you for always understanding and supporting me
-I think you are the best teacher on earth!
At the end of each year, students acknowledge one another by writing a short note to their classmates and their teacher. Here are a few excerpts to Lori Fukuoka, the 3rd and 4th grade teacher who is celebrating 20 years at Ho`ala School. These students are great examples of the appreciation they feel for an amazing, dedicated teacher! Here are a few photos of current students and years past!
Hoʻāla School’s first annual Touch-a-Truck event was a great success! Students tried on military vests, climbed into first responder vehicles, watched cranes extend high into the sky, and even enjoyed some shave ice. Mahalo to all of the participants who were so gracious to talk with our students about the role their vehicles play in helping them do their jobs.
Students excitedly rode their bikes and scooters in our annual Trike-a-Thon to show their support and raise money for the children’s research hospital. A few teachers and parents even got in on the fun!

We realize that schools are crucial partners in supporting the health and well-being of students. In addition to a great academic program, Ho`ala School offers the social/emotional support students need especially at this time. Trusted relationships are formed and students know they are heard and an important part of the school community. Students talked about ahupuaʻa and its 3 parts: uka, kula, and kai as they learned about the stream that runs through the valley to the ocean.

Come see why we are leaders in Social/Emotional Learning in Hawaii and beyond at our next OPEN HOUSE Saturday, March 26 9am - 12pm. A recent testimonial: We feel assured sending our children to school every day, because at Hoʻāla, we know that our children are in a safe space where they are valued and also taught to value others. They are gaining an education that will open doors to their future while developing the social-emotional skills of being kind and caring individuals. It’s true that it takes a village to raise a child, and we’re grateful to have found that village at Hoʻāla School.
Fifth and sixth graders visited and donated blankets, towels and handmade cards for each of the shelter’s pets. The students loved getting to meet all of the pets. If you’re looking to adopt a pet or make donations, you can contact directly for more information.

Ho`āla Education is a philosophy that uses a coherent system of practices to develop citizens of personal integrity who act effectively for the greater good. Ho`āla Education is based on the work of Alfred Adler as articulated by Rudolf Dreikurs and others. Adler held that human behavior is purposive or future oriented, although unconsciously so. Adler identifies two basic motivations and says that each of us is searching for two things:
--a strong sense (or experience) of significance, and
--a strong sense (or experience) of belonging
How we achieve this purpose:
School and home partner to create environments where children develop habits of responsibility, respect, resourcefulness, and responsiveness through example and experience, and as a result, flourish as successful, healthy, and contributing human beings.
