Rowdy Girl Sanctuary (RGS) provides sanctuary to farm animals at risk of being slaughtered and promotes an ethical vegan lifestyle. RGS seeks to educate the public on plant based food options, FFA/4H, factory farming practices, and the devastating impact of animal agriculture on the environment.

This post is for Deniz and all the others like him who were forced to drag heavy loads through traffic, heat, and exhaust to their deaths. This post is for the New Yorkers who photographed this cruelty and made it blow up on social media. This post is for the individuals and organizations all over the world who cared to step up and speak out. We are all changing the course of history together.

Thank you Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani for hearing the people and acting swiftly to stop a cruel injustice that has gone on far too long. Banning New York City carriage horses is an incredible victory for the animal liberation movement.

Living beings do not exist for human amusement. They are not novelties. They are not commodities.

Horses belong in green pastures or wild plains with the feeling of soft earth beneath their hooves, breathing fresh air, surrounded by peace— not inhaling carbon monoxide on concrete while dodging sirens and traffic.

As former Texas cattle ranchers turned animal rights activists, we know how possible change truly is and how quick it can be.

A kinder future for horses is possible. 🤎🐴

For generations, horse-drawn carriages have been treated as a charming tradition. But behind that tradition are living, feeling animals who deserve to have their needs put before our entertainment and convenience.

Progress happens when we start questioning what we've always considered normal. And every step toward a world that treats animals with compassion is worth celebrating.

May we keep moving toward a future where all animals are valued for who they are, not what they can do for us.

Welcome Apollo to our sanctuary tribe!

Apollo is one lucky little baby. He didn’t stand much of a chance in this difficult world.

Apollo’s momma, Genisse, was a teaching tool in the FFA, where children are taught to see animals as resources. Fortunately for Genisse, her student caregiver, Laila, didn’t take the bait. She promptly came to love Genisse and was devastated when she died of an infection after giving birth to Apollo.

Laila’s family started caring for little orphan Apollo and soon everyone had fallen in love with him. But that’s not supposed to happen in FFA. The family received an offer of $6,800 for him. But Apollo was no longer for sale. As he got bigger, they realized they needed to find a home for him where he would be safe.

That home is right here at Rowdy Girl Sanctuary. He has started his life here seamlessly and everyone instantly loves him. He is the sweetest, cuddliest, most adorable new addition to our family. He loves affection and enjoys being close to people.

Welcoming Apollo isn’t the only win. We have had some serious discussions with Laila and her family about FFA and the animal agriculture industry. They have agreed to join our Families Choosing Compassion program, which means they will be able to remain part of Apollo’s life for as long as he naturally lives. We hope to continue to inspire them to see farmed animals as sentient beings with rights rather than as resources with a price tag.

Frosty’s story could have ended very differently. 🐄💚

At just 6 months old, this beautiful Texas Longhorn arrived at Rowdy Girl Sanctuary scared and unsure of everything around him.

So many calves are raised for a life that ultimately ends at slaughter. Frosty got a different ending.

Now, he gets to grow up safe, loved, and surrounded by a family of other rescued animals — exactly as he should. 🌱

This is why sanctuaries matter.

Grace and her baby, Randy, came to us because a rancher’s wife bottle fed Grace and fell in love with her. That love made her cross the invisible line that separates pets from “livestock.”

That’s the same thing that happened to me on a Texas cattle ranch. It happens more than you think on cattle ranches. You’ve got your blinders on so business can continue as usual. And then someone comes along who opens your heart. In my case, it meant upending my husband’s whole retirement plan and converting the cattle ranch to a farm animal sanctuary, and us to vegan activists!

In the case of the rancher’s wife who surrendered Grace and Randy, it meant securing a place where they could live out their lives in peace. She was real sad when she had to surrender the two of them. They had formed a deep bond. But she knew they would have an incredible life at Rowdy Girl Sanctuary instead of being sold to the highest bidder and mercilessly slaughtered.

These beings are so lovable, just as much as your dog or cat. That’s what folks don’t understand. You can love a cow, pig or chicken just as much as the animals who share your home.

It takes a hell of a lot of inner strength to stand up to the majority of society telling you you’re wrong. It is so much easier to go with the majority? I live in the middle of cattle country in Texas. I still have all the same friends and family who were born and raised in Texas like me. I didn’t become vegan and then move to a progressive city. NO! I stayed right where I was and made the world I wanted to see — right in my own backyard.

Vegans are not weak, physically or mentally. I have met so many fellow vegans now and I can tell you that they are some of the strongest, smartest, most independent folks I know. Many of them, like me, faced immense opposition from friends, family and community but remained steadfast in what they KNEW to be true; that what we do to farmed animals is a moral crime.

Going from a cattle rancher to a vegan animal sanctuary steward and animal rights activist, I’ve seen all sides of the story. And I know without a doubt, which side of the story is the right one. Veganism is rooted in the truth of compassion for all beings and that is an idea that will benefit all of us.

We never could have imagined where this story would take us. 🥹🌱

What started as a cattle ranch in Texas became a sanctuary for animals who deserved a life beyond what they were born into.

And now, we get to travel around the country sharing that story, meeting incredible people, and showing what’s possible when we choose a different path.

Vibrant Vegan Fest was such a beautiful reminder of just how far this journey has come. 💚

How else can you explain the fact that most people in the world regularly purchase the flesh of a tortured and killed animal?

When you buy flesh, eggs, cow’s milk, you are supporting a system that relies on the exploitation and abuse of animals. They just don’t happen to be the ones that live in your home. Would you take your family dog to the slaughterhouse to be put down? I don’t think so — but yet we’ve been indoctrinated to believe it’s okay for millions of cows, pigs and chickens to go there?

If you’re interested in the ethics of loving animals — not just the aesthetics, you should be living your life in accordance with vegan principles.

There came a time in my life where I had to ask myself whether I was truly an animal lover, or just a pet lover. Because I met a calf who crossed that line. I started bottle-feeding her on my husband’s cattle ranch and the bond that formed between us was just as strong as the bond I’ve formed with any of my pets. And yet her relatives were showing up on my dinner plate.

My husband’s retirement income relied on the cattle ranch, our place in the community relied on being cattle ranchers and towing the line. But I couldn’t do it anymore. The more I observed the animals and the more I observed my own heart, the more I realized this was not the path for me.

11 years later, my husband and I are vegan, stewards of an animal sanctuary and doing our best to create a vegan world.

I love me a good, ol’ Texas VegFest! And I’m bringing my good, ol’ Texas husband with me this time to the Port Aransas VegFest this Saturday on October 10th!, 2026 — where HE is gonna be doing the talking for once. Come on out to ask all your burning questions of the former cattle rancher who survived his vegan wife and came out on the other side a vegan activist himself!

I’ll be there selling and signing my book, “Rowdy Girl: Confessions of a Vegan Cattle Rancher,” which details the whole, bloody battle between Tommy and I over the fate of what was once our cattle ranch. (Spoiler alert: I won and it’s now a sanctuary for over 100 animal residents.)
