I am so very sad to hear of the passing of Dolly Parton, who was an absolute legend with a gorgeous heart who inspired my every move as a young, aspiring country singer. I sang so many of her songs, playing at night clubs, the rodeo, anywhere that would have me.

She came from poverty but took what she had with her huge heart and made it shine for the whole world. As someone who came from poverty as well as severe domestic violence, I sought to emulate her example. She served as a guiding light for a young girl mired in addiction and the chaos of trauma.

Her presence, her compassion and her generosity of spirit lit up the world and made it a better place to be.

That’s what I have always sought to do since going vegan and converting my husband’s cattle ranch into a vegan animal sanctuary. What was once a place of exploitation and killing has become a place of beauty, love and peace.

Dolly, rest in peace, and I will always honor your legacy of kindness, your pure soul and your music that touched and uplifted millions. Your gift certainly inspired this lonely, lost Texas rhinestone cowgirl to find her voice and her place.

Dolly Parton’s legacy was so much bigger than music. 💔

“You can be rich in spirit, kindness, love, and all those things that you can’t put a dollar sign on.”

And Dolly truly lived that.

Her compassion extended to animals in some really amazing ways. 🐾

🦅 At Dollywood in Tennessee, Dolly partnered with the American Eagle Foundation to create a protected home for non-releasable bald eagles and other birds of prey. The sanctuary gives these animals who can no longer survive in the wild a safe place to live while educating visitors about their protection and conservation.

🐶 Dolly’s pet accessory brand, Doggy Parton, donates a portion of its proceeds to Willa B. Farms, a Tennessee-based nonprofit animal rescue helping animals in need.

And these are just a few examples of the way Dolly used her success to give back — not just to people, but to animals who have no voice and depend on us for their care.

She could have used her wealth solely to make her own life more comfortable. Instead, she consistently chose to turn it into something that could help animals.

That’s what it means to be rich in spirit, kindness, and love. ❤️

Dolly, thank you for leaving behind a legacy of generosity and compassion. May we all remember that the greatest thing we can accumulate in this life isn't money — it’s the good we leave behind. 🕊️🌱

Really, y’all? This is America now? Rounding up our wild horses, selling them over the border to be slaughtered for profit? A New York Times journalist recently reported that the numbers of wild horses at the auction house has increased dramatically. In 2025, the government sold 3,700 wild horses, many of whom ended up in Canadian slaughterhouses.

We have a really big problem in our society. Everyone is seen as a unit of profit, everyone can be commodified. There is no inherent respect for the land or its inhabitants beyond what profit and power it can give. We see this in our factory farming systems every day, we see this in the decimation of the land and “culling” of wild animals — and now we see it in the sale and slaughter of our wild horses, a poignant and tragic symbol of where we are headed.

I used to participate in this system unwittingly. I was indoctrinated into the cult of American killing as a young girl growing up in Texas. I saw violence in my home and I tasted violence in my food. I went to the rodeo, I ate barbecued animal flesh and I married a hunter and later cattle rancher.

It was on that cattle ranch that I finally awoke from this trance of violence. I fell in love with a baby cow I was bottle-feeding and I just could not reconcile both loving her and eating her. Those two things together did not compute. I went vegan and managed to crowd fund our way from a killing operation to a peaceful sanctuary for any and all farmed animals with targets on their backs.

Me and my husband are now proud Texas vegans, tending the land and animals, in awe of their majesty and seeing them as their own, independent souls — NOT units of production.

Tom Tom’s story could have ended very differently. 💔

He was supposed to become dinner for a family. Instead, a neighbor saw his worth, rescued him, and brought him to Rowdy Girl Sanctuary.

Tom Tom got something he was never supposed to have: **9 happy years simply being Tom Tom.** 🐮❤️

Y’all, that’s a quote from the article that just came out about my and Tommy’s story! I’m psyched that we are reaching more people with our unlikely story of transformation from former Texas cattle ranchers to vegans running an animal sanctuary.

That quote really embodies something essential about this whole journey I’ve been on and it was a realization that came about from writing and re-writing my story in my new book, “Rowdy Girl: Confessions of a Vegan Cattle Rancher.”

I realized that every horrific, traumatic thing that happened to me in my life prepared me for the moment when I was called to stand up for animals with my whole heart and soul. I put my marriage on the line, my finances on the line, my happiness on the line. And I would do it again and again. I would take a bullet for these animals. Nothing will ever change my mind that this is the purpose I was called to — helping to bring about animal liberation and a vegan world.

Going vegan on a cattle ranch ain’t easy. But going through domestic violence as a child, sexual abuse as a teenager and young adult, and major substance abuse as an adult ain’t easy either. I was prepared for this work and finding it brought all the pieces together into a puzzle that finally made sense. Nothing could stop me — not even my husband.

I have noticed that as soon as you bring up veganism, men get real weird. They start posting photos of dead animals or talking about plants feelings, or crop deaths. Guys, come on! Are you really so fragile that reading a single post by a vegan threatens your whole identity?

I don’t understand why veganism is so threatening to men. Vegans stand up for others, they stand up for what they believe in even when the whole crowd says they’re wrong, they listen to the facts and act accordingly, they want to protect and save others. Those qualities are heroic and admirable. And yet seeing them in another triggers the most vile hatred.

My husband Tommy embodied nearly all the stereotypes you can think of for a Texas man. Hunting, fishing, cattle ranching — he did them all. And yeah, he too was dismissive and outraged when I went vegan. Just like I did, he had to go through a learning process. But he did it, and 11 years later, is a happy, healthier, strong VEGAN MAN standing up for what’s right, protecting the land and animals he loves, and standing side by side with me.

But I'm so much more than that.

I love juicy watermelon on a hot summer day. 🍉

I have best friends I nap beside.

I have a favorite toy.

I have a favorite spot to cool off when the Texas heat rolls in.

Just like the dogs and cats we share our homes with, pigs have unique personalities, preferences, and form lasting friendships. They aren't products — they're individuals with lives that matter.

Some folks find comfort in ignorance — but I don’t do that. Once I see the truth, I can’t unsee it. And when I saw the truth about what we do to animals in our farming systems, it hit me in the chest like a ton of bricks.

What I saw being done to animals connected immediately to my own trauma. I watched workers violently beating animals destined for death — just like I saw my daddy, beating my momma near to death. I watched female cows being impregnated against their will, the farmer’s elbow violating them all the way up to his elbow and I remembered all the times I was violated as a young woman. Every moment of footage I watched recalled the horror, fear, rage and despair I faced as a vulnerable young person.

So, no. Flesh, eggs, and stolen mother’s milk are not comfort foods for me. Violence will never comfort me or fill my belly.

My comfort foods are fresh, whole fruits of the earth. There is no bloody battle for dominance. You just pick them. I believe this is the ideal human diet and nothing will shake my faith. It feels good, it looks good, and nobody suffers and dies for it.

Hayden Panettiere, Actress and animal rights activist, passed away at the young age of 36 on Sunday August 16. Though she was mainly known for her work on the show “Heroes” and the film “Remember the Titans,” she was also an ardent activist for marine mammals.

One of her most notable moments of activism was caught on film in the Oscar-winning documentary The Cove. With other activists, she bravely paddled out into the middle of a dolphin hunt in Taiji, Japan attempting to disrupt it and bring attention to the issue. That’s my kind of Rowdy Girl.

Rest in peace and power, Hayden. Your life was too short but what a legacy. I hope you inspire more young people to come together and defend the beautiful animals with whom we share this planet.
