⚓️ Celebrating One Year of Harbor! 🎉

Today our students helped us mark Harbor Christian Academy’s first anniversary in the best way-by making it their own. 💙

In D.O.C.K., they created posters, banners, and other masterpieces celebrating Harbor’s first year.

Looking across the table at all of their handmade signs, drawings, essays, and messages was such a beautiful reflection of what this first year has really been about: the students and families who fill Harbor every day.

Happy 1st Anniversary, Harbor! ⚓️ Here’s to everything we’ve built together—and everything still to come. 💙✨

Every child deserves to walk into a classroom knowing there is a place for them there. 💙

Inclusion isn’t about lowering expectations. It’s about recognizing that children learn, communicate, participate, and grow in different ways, and giving them the support they need to succeed.

At Harbor, belonging comes first. Because when students feel safe, supported, and genuinely valued for who they are, they’re able to grow in ways that extend far beyond academics. ⚓️

We strive to make this kind of learning experience the rule, not the exception. 💯

It was a wonderful Wednesday at Harbor! 💛⚓️

There’s no greater joy than seeing our students involved in all aspects of our little school! From running the sound booth during First Fruits to our Journalism students conducting their first impromptu, independent interviews and even taking staff headshots, we couldn’t be prouder of these kids!

We love watching them discover new skills, step outside their comfort zones, and take ownership of the special community we’re building together. 💙

🌟STAFF SPOTLIGHT🌟

We may be a little late with this Staff Spotlight, but we’re calling it dramatic timing in honor of our Drama instructor. 🎭

Meet Matt Wessel, Harbor’s Middle School Social Studies and Drama instructor!

Matt recently made the move from Wisconsin to Texas to join our Harbor team, and we’re so glad he did. He brings plenty of creativity, curiosity, and fresh ideas to the classroom, both on and off the stage. Whether he’s bringing history to life or helping students step into a character, Matt is always looking for ways to get young minds thinking, imagining, questioning, and making meaningful connections.

When he’s not teaching, Matt enjoys reading and a good cup of coffee — two things that pair pretty perfectly with Social Studies. ☕📚

And, yes, Matt also happens to be Dr. K’s son! Around Harbor, you may occasionally hear him refer to her as “Dr. Mom,” a habit that has started rubbing off on a few of the rest of us. 😉

We’re so excited to have Matt as part of our Harbor family and can’t wait to see all the creativity, learning, and probably a little theatrical chaos he brings to our Middle School students this year.

Help us give Mr. Wessel a warm Harbor welcome! 💙⚓️

🌟STAFF SPOTLIGHT🌟

Meet Liz Kitchens!

This Staff Spotlight may be a little belated, but the work happening behind the scenes at Harbor certainly hasn’t been!

Harbor Christian Academy is excited to welcome Liz Kitchens as our Operations Manager. While Liz won’t be on campus full-time, she is already working diligently behind the scenes to support our staff, strengthen our systems, and help keep the day-to-day operations of Harbor running smoothly, all while continuing to hold down the fort in her role with Waco ISD!

Liz brings more than 20 years of executive administrative experience, including nearly two decades working in the court system before transitioning into human resources. Throughout her career, one thing has remained constant: a heart for serving others.

Liz believes God created her to be a servant, and that calling is evident in the way she approaches her work. She is always looking for ways to help people, improve efficiency, and make day-to-day operations easier for those around her. Her love of organization, processes, and finding better ways to get things done makes her a wonderful fit for this new role at Harbor.

When she isn’t working, Liz loves spending time with her family. She is currently learning the ropes of being an empty nester and enjoying the opportunity to discover some new hobbies along the way.

Some of the most important work at a school happens quietly behind the scenes, and we are incredibly grateful to have Liz helping Harbor grow stronger from the inside out.

Welcome to your new role, Liz! We’re so thankful you’re part of our Harbor family. 💙⚓️

⚓️ Fridays at Harbor are something special! 💙

We wrapped up our first week with a Friday full of learning, creativity, problem-solving, and plenty of fun!

📰 In Mrs. Amy’s Journalism class, our students officially chose their roles in our newsroom! From reporters and editors to the many other important jobs that bring a publication together, our students are beginning to discover how their individual strengths can contribute to something created as a team. I’m so proud of the mature, thoughtful, and innovative discussions I heard as we laid the groundwork for Harbor’s Narwhal News and all that it can become this year.

🔐 STEM Friday brought an Escape Room challenge with Mrs. Cootware! Students worked together to solve puzzles, think critically, communicate, and keep trying when the answer wasn’t immediately obvious. There was plenty of thinking and teamwork happening around those tables!

🍫 Our PK and Primary students got in on the Friday fun with Fun Food Friday with Ms. Cootware and Ms. Joa! It was a sweet combination of hands-on learning, creativity, and fun to end a very full first week.

🧪 And last, but certainly not least, atoms were destabilized and things got a little chaotic (in the best possible way!) in Mrs. Nine’s Science class! There’s something pretty special about having a Math and Science teacher who can have students saying, “This is so fun!” while doing chemistry on their very first week! We are so blessed by Mrs. Nine and what she brings to our school!

But as much as we love seeing our students engaged in great activities, what made us proudest this week wasn’t something you can capture in an assignment or photograph.

It was watching students help one another without being asked. It was seeing new friendships begin to form, older and younger students encourage one another, classmates working through challenges together, and our students approaching a brand-new school year with wonderful attitudes.

In those moments, we’re reminded of God’s goodness and the beautiful work He is doing in the lives of our students. It is such a blessing to watch Him shape their hearts, grow their confidence, and teach them what it means to encourage, serve, and love one another well.

Enrollment is still open for the 2026/2027 school year if you or someone in your life is looking for a safe Harbor for their learner this school year!

The first day is always a little bit of everything—new routines, new friendships, familiar faces, and plenty of moments that remind us why we love having these kids here.

There’s a sense of belonging at Harbor that is almost tangible, and getting to watch our students find their place here and shine in the light God has given them is something we never take for granted. And we’re only getting started. ✨

Day one of the 2026–2027 school year is in the books, and Harbor feels full again. We’re so glad to be back. 💙

🌟 A strong start makes a lasting difference!

At Harbor Christian Academy, we know that every child develops at their own pace, and for some of our youngest learners, a full school day may not be the best fit just yet. That’s why we’re excited to offer a half-day option for Pre-K and Kindergarten for the 2026–2027 school year!

Our half-day program gives families greater flexibility while still providing children with meaningful, high-quality learning experiences during these incredibly important early years.

Research consistently shows that quality early childhood education helps children build the foundation they’ll carry with them for years to come. At Harbor, our youngest learners have opportunities to:

🧠 Build early academic skills and curiosity
💛 Grow in confidence, character, and independence
🤝 Develop communication and social skills
📚 Discover a love of learning
✝️ Learn and grow in a nurturing, faith-filled environment

And because small class sizes matter, our students benefit from more individualized attention, stronger relationships with their teachers, and an environment where each child can truly be known, supported, and encouraged.

Whether your family is looking for greater flexibility or simply a shorter school day while your child adjusts to the classroom environment, our half-day program offers another way to make Harbor fit your family.

Now enrolling Pre-K 3’s, Pre-K 4’s, and Kindergarten for 2026–2027! ⚓️💙💛

We’ve been busy this week! ⚓️

While our students have been enjoying the last days of summer break, the Harbor crew has been hard at work preparing to welcome them back! This week, our staff had the wonderful opportunity to train with Rene Tilsley, Dr. Lisa Sanchez, and Virginia Reynolds with Baylor Center for Disability and Flourishing.

We started the week by exploring practical, evidence-based approaches to supporting our students, including creating structured routines and smoother transitions, recognizing and preventing challenging behaviors, and understanding how a student’s environment and experiences can influence behavior. We also learned more about meaningful data collection and how observing patterns can help us better understand individual needs, measure progress, determine which supports are working, and make informed decisions moving forward. Our team also explored tiered levels of support and ways to provide increasingly individualized strategies based on what each student needs to be successful.

Today, Rene returned to Harbor to continue guiding us in recognizing and preventing escalation and responding calmly and effectively when challenges arise. We also focused on one of the most important pieces: working together as a team so our students receive consistent, thoughtful support from the adults around them.

At Harbor, preparing for a new school year means more than getting classrooms and supplies ready. It means preparing ourselves to know, support, encourage, and empower the children who will soon walk through our doors.

A huge thank you to our friends at Baylor Center for Disability and Flourishing for continuing to invest in our staff and students. We are incredibly grateful for your time, expertise, and partnership with Harbor! 💙⚓️
