Lake Air Montessori Magnet School Honors Juneteenth

On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, enslaved African Americans in Texas finally learned they were free. This historic day became known as Juneteenth and is recognized as the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States.

Mrs. Martinez is a proud wife and mother of three energetic boys, ages 10, 9, and 4. This year marks her 10th year in education, with teaching experience spanning San Antonio, the Dallas area, and now Waco ISD. As a first-generation graduate of Texas State University and the oldest of five siblings, she brings dedication, perseverance, and a passion for learning to everything she does.

When she’s not in the classroom, Mrs. Martinez enjoys spending time outdoors, reading a good book, and baking delicious treats. She is excited to build meaningful relationships with her students, create lasting memories, and make this school year a wonderful experience for everyone.

We are excited to welcome our new Discovery Teacher to the Lake Air Montessori family!

With 26 years of experience in education, including 13 years in the classroom, she brings a wealth of knowledge, passion, and dedication to student learning. Holding a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration, she is committed to creating a warm, welcoming environment where students are encouraged to explore, discover, and showcase their creativity in meaningful ways.

Building strong relationships with students, families, and colleagues is at the heart of her work, and she is excited to be part of the supportive and inspiring community at Lake Air Montessori.

Outside of school, she has been happily married for 27 years and is the proud mother of three amazing children. She is also a grandmother to one beautiful granddaughter and is eagerly awaiting the arrival of another grandchild soon! In her free time, she enjoys traveling and making lifelong memories with her family.

With 12 years of experience in education, she brings a wealth of knowledge and a passion for literacy to our campus. She spent 9 years as a middle school ELA teacher in Sugar Land, Texas, and the past 3 years serving as a librarian in Waco ISD. She holds a Master’s Degree in Library Science and is dedicated to helping students discover the joy of reading.

Whether through engaging read-alouds, supporting research projects, or connecting students with their next favorite book, she is eager to help strengthen the culture of reading at Lake Air Montessori Magnet.

When she’s not in the library, you can find her reading, running, hiking in Cameron Park, or enjoying a movie night with her husband and their very large cat, Chunky!

Please join us in giving a warm Leopard welcome to our new Primary teacher Cari Young!

We are excited to welcome her to Lake Air Montessori, where she brings a passion for early childhood education and a dedication to creating a nurturing, engaging environment where children can grow with confidence, independence, and curiosity.

A graduate of Mart High School and Tarleton State University, she earned her Montessori Early Childhood Credential from the Houston Montessori Center in February 2025. She has spent the last four years teaching at Waco Montessori School and is excited to bring her experience and love of Montessori education to our campus. Even more special, she completed her student teaching right here at Lake Air Montessori in 2015, making her return feel like coming home.

When she’s not in the classroom, she enjoys reading thriller and mystery novels, traveling with her family, and spending time with her husband and their 7-year-old daughter. Family is at the heart of everything she does.

We are thrilled to have Mrs Young join our school community and can’t wait for our students and families to get to know her. Welcome to Lake Air Montessori—we’re so glad you’re here! 💚🐆

💚🐆 Please help us give a warm Lake Air Montessori welcome to one of our newest team member, Jennifer Herrera! 🐆💚

Jennifer and her husband recently celebrated 10 years of marriage and have been together for 17 wonderful years. Together they have four amazing children, including two proud Lake Air students—Julissa, who recently completed 8th grade, and Jasper, who will be entering 4th grade this fall.

This year has been especially exciting for Jennifer, as she was promoted to “Grandma” in January! She is the proud grandmother of an adorable grandson, Xamir, who has quickly become the joy of her world.

Jennifer holds an Occupational Skills Award from MCC with behavioral certification and is currently pursuing her Associate’s Degree in Business Accounting, which she will complete this December. She is entering her fourth year with Waco ISD as a Special Education Paraprofessional, having spent two years in ECSE and now beginning her second year in Aspire.

Jennifer is passionate about helping students reach their full potential and believes that every child deserves love, support, guidance, and the opportunity to succeed beyond any limitations others may place on them.

We are excited to have Jennifer as part of the Lake Air family and look forward to the positive impact she will continue to make in the lives of our students.
