Did women write music in times gone by?

Of course they did!

Princess Amalie of Saxony was an accomplished musician and writer. She wrote under the pen name of A. Serena. She studied music with Franz Schubert, Joseph Schuster, and other contemporaries.

She wrote several operas, including La Casa Disabitata, a comic opera.

Why Piano Lessons?

3. Resilience

Learning anything for the first time goes hand in hand with making mistakes. This is especially true with piano lessons! The lessons move at the pace of the student. We can move at whatever pace works for you or your child, constantly making challenges and pushing you to learn. Making mistakes and having to try again are all a part of practicing!

School is around the corner and it's time to sign up for Fall Piano Lessons!

The start of every school year brings both excitement and trepidation. Our kids are signed up for activities, and parents need to figure out how to balance everything. Will my kids be bored? Are they moving enough, being active? Do they have an artistic outlet? So many things to worry about! I understand completely.

So why piano lessons?

The piano is a unique instrument. It uses both the left and right hands equally and at the same time! Ever tried patting your head and rubbing your stomach? It's like that, but by 10 times! It strengthens kids' abilities to use both hands and multitask. It aids in finger dexterity, which is the ability for our fingers and hands to move in complicated ways, like with writing or grip strength.

The piano also uses two clefs; the bass clef and the treble clef. Most instruments use one of these clefs. For example, the violin is written in the treble clef. The trombone is written in the bass clef. By learning the piano, kids are exposed to both and it's easier to learn a new instrument.

Piano lessons also offer opportunities for kids to perform. There are five recitals throughout the year and it challenges kids to be brave and perform in front of an audience. They gain confidence by performing and also learn how to roll with mistakes or missteps. They learn what to do when something goes wrong and how to think on their feet.

In short, piano is pretty darn special. Sign up today!

Florence Price is one of our favorite composers! Amazing to learn she has a planet named after her!

An astronomical composer! 🪐

Adopted by the International Astronomical Union in February 2025, 'Price' is named after American composer and musician Florence Beatrice Price, who was the first African American woman to have her music performed by a major symphony orchestra (the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, in 1933). It sits to the south of the prominent crater 'Rachmaninoff'.

Listen to Zeb Soanes’ Composer Carousel tonight from 9pm for an hour of Price's music on the radio or on Global Player.

Latin Music and Nintendo?

Our composer focus this month is Koji Kondo! He is the composer behind many of Nintendo’s video games, including Mario Brothers and The Legend of Zelda.

In a 2001 interview, Kondo expounded on the influence behind the iconic Super Mario Brothers theme. Kondo says he always liked Latin music and wanted the theme to mimic the “bright, happy Portuguese songs”.
