βI stand before you with great pride. This is a historic moment in American political life. Historic for myself, for my people, for all women. For the first time in the history of this nation a political party has chosen a Negro woman for the second highest office in the land. It is a great honor to be chosen as a pioneer. And a great responsibility.β
In 1952, Charlotta Spears Bass was the first Black woman to run for vice president of the United States. She was also a longtime editor of the oldest African American newspaper on the west coast, The California Eagle, and the first African American women to run a newspaper in the U.S. Through the newspaper, Bass sought reformation of employment discrimination, racial violence, and housing segregation. As a candidate for vice presidency, Bass's campaign called for peace with the Soviet Union, an end to the Korean War, and greater emphasis on civil rights and women's rights.

What is mental health?
Emotional
Psychological
Social well-being
Our mental health helps us determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices.
Challenges
Because of stigma, Black people often describe physical symptoms related to mental health problems.
Some health care providers lack cultural competency and may not connect physical symptoms with a mental health condition.
