A new study highlighted in today's The Washington Post reinforces something Scouting has long understood through experience - time outdoors changes people in meaningful ways.
Researchers found that regular contact with nature is linked to higher self-compassion, improved body image, and greater overall life satisfaction. In a large global study of more than 50,000 people, those who spent time in natural settings consistently reported better mental well-being, less stress, and a stronger sense of purpose.
Experts explain that nature provides something modern life often lacks. It creates space to slow down, step away from constant comparison, and reset mentally. Even short, simple moments outdoors can make a difference, especially when people are present and engaged rather than distracted.
These findings closely reflect what happens every day in Scouting America. Whether it is a first campout, a hike, a service project outdoors, or simply learning to be comfortable outside, young people gain more than skills. They gain confidence, resilience, and perspective.
Scouting does not require remote wilderness or long expeditions. It starts with small, consistent experiences outdoors that build into something lasting. A walk in the woods, a campsite under the stars, a moment of teamwork in nature, these experiences shape how young people see themselves and the world around them.
The science is catching up to what Scouts have always known. Time outdoors matters, and it helps build stronger, healthier, more grounded individuals.
Help spread the word. Share this message with someone who needs a reminder of why getting outside still matters. And invite them to head outside with a local Scout unit.

Less than two weeks left to take the Safeguarding Youth Training.
Youth Protection is expiring at the end of the month.
All Registered Scouters must take Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT). This is replacing the old Youth Protection Training (YPT).
Safeguarding Youth is required for all registered Scouters 18 years and older. It is also highly recommended for all adults and parents involved in Scouting.
If you have already taken the new course, the new Safeguarding Youth Refresher Training is available to help you renew this annual required training.
If you have completed the full Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT) course and it is currently active or has expired within the last 7 days, you are eligible to take the Refresher Training.
If your full SYT training has expired for 7 days or more, you will need to complete the full Safeguarding Youth Course again before receiving credit.
Participants taking the Refresher Training must successfully pass the exam on the first attempt to receive credit for the Y01 training code. If the exam is not passed, the system will automatically route you to the full Safeguarding Youth Course to ensure a complete review of the material. Once the refresher exam is failed, the refresher course cannot be relaunched, and the full course must be completed.

Tonight was all about the simple joys—hotdogs, horseshoes, laughter, and great company. With 8 of our crew members present, it was the perfect reminder that sometimes the best moments are the ones where we just slow down and enjoy being together.
As we look ahead, it’s hard to believe we have just ONE meeting left before the end of the semester. But what a summer we have waiting for us!
Two of our members are heading to serve on staff at Philmont Scout Ranch — an incredible opportunity to lead, serve, and grow in one of Scouting’s most iconic places.
Two more are off to the National Scout Jamboree — representing us on a national stage of adventure and leadership.
And for all of us—a summer packed with outdoor adventures, growth, and unforgettable experiences.
We’re proud of this group. We’re excited for what’s ahead. And we’re already looking forward to the energy and momentum we’ll bring into the fall.
One more meeting. One amazing summer. Endless possibilities.
