Tomorrow is a very special day.

On January 15, 2015, I formed an LLC, and Building Better Futures was born! I had always been a w-2 employee, but despite the risk, I felt a strong calling to support educators, students, and their families. Through my family's own challenges, I had gained insight, specialized knowledge, and a passion to help bridge the gap between schools and families, especially for those with trauma, mental health challenges, or learning disabilities.

The road has been winding, with many ups and downs along the way. But one thing is for sure.... I have had the honor of adding some of the most talented, heart-centered consultants to the BBF team, and we have worked with so many passionate teachers, administrators, social workers, guidance counselors, psychologists, bus drivers, teaching assistants, aides and monitors, and maintenance staff along the way.

So on this day, we are celebrating our 10 year anniversary. I'm so proud of what we have built, and I can't wait to see where we go over the next 10 years. ✨️

Sometimes the support we desperately need is the hardest to find.

Talking about death and loss and grief is heavy.

During a time of grief, one's emotions are often raw and we worry we will say the wrong thing.

We live in a society where picking yourself up by the bootstraps and putting on a happy face is admired. So, asking for help when we are struggling can be very difficult.

For all of these reasons, and many more, we decided to offer a parent/guardian webinar on Navigating Loss for Families, and I went right to the best, Kim Perone, MA, CLC, CWMF, to lead the discussion.

We had several hundred people register, and Kim shared her own story of loss from the heart with deep compassion. I'm so grateful to have been able to offer such a wonderful and needed resource to the community.

It was such an honor to present the opening keynote for the New Hampshire Su***de Prevention Council's Annual Conference.

My topic was about the power of human connection, and why it is becoming more and more difficult for us to feel connected in our personal lives, in our workplaces, and in our communities.

I shared my personal story about my journey from isolation to filling my life with meaningful relationships that have lifted me up in very challenging times.

The best part of this day was meeting so many open-hearted, compassionate people who also shared parts of their stories with me.

I met some great people today at the Southern Adirondack Child Care Network's Early Child Conference. I attended with three colleagues from Early Care & Learning Council

Tonight marks the beginning of our 5th year of the Parents as Partners Webinar Series for school districts.

Tonight's topic is one that affects more families than you'd think, and is very stressful for the entire family.

SCHOOL AVOIDANCE AND REFUSAL

One of the keys to effectively overcoming this issue is to determine the root cause of the anxiety. It's not going to be durably solved by rewarding, bribing, or threatening your child with consequences.

Once we understand and empathize with the child's perspective, we have laid the groundwork for finding a solution. I will be sharing several strategies parents/guardians can use to address school avoidance and refusal, and bring more peace to the morning routine.

In the Opinion section of today's NYTimes, Jonathan Haidt, author of "The Anxious Generation," and Will Johnson, CEO of the Harris Poll reported on the findings of a recent national survey of 1006 Gen Z adults (ages 18-27) regarding their thoughts about social media.

Some interesting findings:

⚠️23% of the sample said they spend 7+ hours/day using social media

⚠️37% said social media has had a negative impact on their emotional health

⚠️45% will not allow their children to have a smartphone until high school, and 69% support a law requiring social media companies to offer child-safe options for those under 18

⛔️Almost half wish X and TikTok didn't exist

Parents and caregivers‼️

The data is clear. We need to set firm boundaries and limits, use filters, have discussions with our children, and get them outside to play.

They may not like it, but it's necessary for their social and emotional wellbeing.
