Many colleges have made reasonable accommodations for students who have been unable to take the standardized tests needed for admission to their schools, but we still see a large amount of students taking the SAT and ACT. Why is that? The SAT and ACT still act as an important factor for admission and merit based aid even in schools that have switched to test optional. Students who are able to score high marks for the SAT and ACT can have an edge for these admissions and aid decisions, and so should take the opportunity to take these tests.

Despite colleges dropping their testing requirements because of the coronavirus, students continue to sign up for the exams, believing that a score is the key to admission.

The biggest myth about the SAT is that it’s a definitive measurement of intelligence, when in reality it’s more reflective of the quality of education and environment a student was exposed to. We applaud the CollegeBoard for taking a step in the right direction by contextualizing student’s SAT scores.
