🇺🇸 LABOR DAY: Your Work Matters. So Does Your Health.

🇺🇸 Today, we recognize the people whose work keeps our communities moving. Some work behind a desk. Others spend the day lifting, driving, building, teaching, caring for others, standing for hours, or constantly on the move. Different jobs place different demands on the body—but every worker depends on their health and function to do what they do.

This Labor Day is a good reminder that taking care of yourself isn't separate from your work. It helps you continue doing it. Move when you can. Build strength. Prioritize recovery. Get enough sleep. Pay attention when something doesn't feel right. And remember that your value isn't measured by how much discomfort you can tolerate just to finish the day.

Work hard. Recover well. Take care of the body that makes it possible.

To everyone who contributes their time, skills, and effort every day: Happy Labor Day. 🇺🇸

Te ayuda a poder seguir realizándolo. Muévete cuando puedas. Desarrolla fuerza. Prioriza tu recuperación. Duerme adecuadamente.

Happy Labor Day. 🇺🇸

Friday Topic: Do You Need X-Rays Before Chiropractic Care?

🇺🇸 Not every chiropractic patient needs an X-ray. Imaging can be extremely valuable when there is a clinical reason for it—but it shouldn't automatically be required simply because you're seeing a chiropractor.

The decision should begin with your:
• Health history
• Current symptoms
• Physical examination
• Previous injuries or conditions
• Clinical findings
• Risk factors

An X-ray may be appropriate when the examination raises concern for things such as trauma, fracture, significant structural abnormality, certain diseases, or other findings that could change how your condition should be managed. But when imaging is unlikely to change the diagnosis or treatment plan, routinely taking X-rays may provide little additional benefit.

And remember: An X-ray is one piece of information—not the entire patient.

Images show anatomy. They don't always explain exactly why someone hurts or how well that person functions. Good clinical care combines the patient's story, examination findings, function, and—when indicated—appropriate imaging.

Examine first. Image when appropriate. Treat the patient, not the picture.

Examina primero. Utiliza imágenes cuando sean apropiadas. Trata al paciente, no a la imagen.

Wednesday Topic: What Actually Happens During a Chiropractic Adjustment?

🇺🇸 That “pop” isn't the treatment.

During a chiropractic adjustment, a chiropractor applies a controlled force to a joint with the goal of improving movement and function when clinically appropriate. Sometimes you may hear a pop or a crack.

That sound is commonly associated with a rapid pressure change within the joint—not bones “going back into place.”

And here's something important:
An adjustment does not have to make a sound to be effective.

Depending on the patient, chiropractors may use different approaches—from manual manipulation to lower-force techniques. But an adjustment should never exist in isolation from clinical reasoning.

Before deciding whether manipulation is appropriate, we consider things like:
• Your health history
• Your symptoms
• Physical examination findings
• Joint movement and function
• Possible precautions or contraindications
• Your individual goals and preferences

And sometimes?

The appropriate decision is not to adjust at all. An adjustment is a clinical tool—not the entire definition of chiropractic care.

Assess first. Choose appropriately. Treat the patient—not the sound.

Dr. Rubén D. García-Avilés, DC, MBA

---

• Posibles precauciones o contraindicaciones
• Tus necesidades, metas y preferencias

Decide apropiadamente. Trata al paciente, no al sonido.

Monday Topic: What Does a Chiropractor Actually Do?

🇺🇸 Chiropractic care is more than “cracking backs.” That may be the image many people have—but modern chiropractic care can involve much more.

A chiropractor evaluates the musculoskeletal system and how pain, movement, strength, mobility, and function may be affecting your daily life. Depending on the patient and the clinical findings, care may include:
• A detailed health history
• Physical, orthopedic, and neurological examination
• Assessment of movement and function
• Manual therapy or spinal manipulation when appropriate
• Exercise and mobility recommendations
• Education about pain, activity, and recovery
• Referral or co-management when something requires another healthcare professional

And importantly: *Not every patient needs the same treatment.*

Good care begins with understanding the person, identifying what may be contributing to the problem, and determining an appropriate plan. Sometimes chiropractic care is appropriate. Sometimes another provider or additional evaluation is needed.

Knowing the difference is part of responsible healthcare.

Evaluate first. Treat appropriately. Keep the patient at the center.

Dr. Rubén D. García-Avilés, DC, MBA

---

Trata apropiadamente. Mantén al paciente en el centro.

Friday Topic: Recovery Is Where Adaptation Happens

🇺🇸 Progress isn't only about what you do. It also depends on how well you recover from it. Exercise and physical activity challenge your body. Recovery gives your body time to respond to that challenge.

That process can include:
• Repairing and remodeling tissues
• Restoring energy
• Adapting to training demands
• Supporting physical and mental readiness
• Preparing for the next challenge

Recovery doesn't necessarily mean doing nothing.

It can include: Sleep. Nutrition. Hydration. Light movement. Rest.

And just like training, recovery needs balance. Too little challenge may not stimulate much adaptation. Too much challenge without adequate recovery can exceed your current capacity.

The goal is not to avoid stress. It's to create a cycle your body can successfully respond to:
Challenge → Recover → Adapt → Repeat

You don't become more resilient simply by doing more. You become more resilient by finding the right balance between stress and recovery.

Challenge wisely. Recover intentionally. Build resilience.

Dr. Rubén D. García-Avilés, DC, MBA

---

Recuperarte no necesariamente significa no hacer nada.

Puede incluir: Sueño. Nutrición. Hidratación. Movimiento ligero. Descanso.

Desarrolla resiliencia.

Wednesday Topic: Your Body Responds to What You Practice

🇺🇸 Your body adapts to the demands you place on it.

Walk regularly, and walking becomes more familiar.

Practice balance, and your balance can improve.

Strengthen consistently, and your body can become better prepared to handle resistance.

Gradually increase activity, and your capacity can grow.

This is one of the reasons consistency matters so much.

Adaptation doesn't usually happen after one workout, one stretch, or one treatment.

It happens through repeated, appropriate exposure over time.

The key word is "appropriate."

Too little challenge may not create much change.

Too much, too quickly, may exceed what you're currently prepared to handle.

The goal is to find a challenge your body can tolerate, recover from, and gradually build upon.

Practice. Adapt. Progress.

Your body is always learning from what you repeatedly ask it to do.

Monday Topic: Your Body Is Adaptable

🇺🇸 Your body isn't fragile. It's adaptable. Muscles can become stronger. Joints can become more comfortable with movement. Balance can improve. Coordination can be trained. And your capacity for physical activity can change over time.

The key is giving your body an appropriate challenge—and enough time to adapt. That doesn't mean pushing through every symptom or doing too much too soon.

It means gradually building what your body can tolerate through:
• Regular movement
• Progressive strengthening
• Adequate recovery
• Consistent physical activity
• Patience with the process

We often focus on what the body can't do.

A better question might be: “What can I gradually prepare my body to do?”

Your current capacity isn't necessarily your permanent capacity.

Challenge. Adapt. Build resilience.

Dr. Rubén D. García-Avilés, DC, MBA

---

Tu capacidad actual no necesariamente será tu capacidad permanente.

Desafía. Adapta. Desarrolla resiliencia.

Friday Post: Pain Shouldn't Be Feared—or Ignored

🇺🇸 Pain shouldn't automatically create fear—but it shouldn't simply be ignored either.

Pain is one way your body communicates that something may need attention.

Sometimes the appropriate response is rest.
Sometimes it's movement.
Sometimes it's modifying an activity.
And sometimes it requires a professional evaluation.

The important part is understanding the context.

Ask:
• When did it begin?
• What makes it better or worse?
• Is it improving, staying the same, or worsening?
• Is it affecting movement or daily activities?
• Are there other symptoms occurring with it?

Pain doesn't always mean something is seriously damaged.

But persistent, severe, worsening, unexplained, or concerning pain deserves appropriate evaluation.

The goal isn't to become afraid of every symptom.

It's to become better informed about what your body is telling you.

Listen. Understand. Respond appropriately.

Escucha. Comprende. Responde apropiadamente.

Wednesday Topic: More Pain Doesn't Always Mean More Damage

🇺🇸 A higher pain level doesn't automatically mean there is more tissue damage.

Pain and injury are related—but they are not the same thing.

Think about a paper cut. A very small injury can hurt surprisingly badly.

On the other hand, some changes seen on X-rays or MRIs may exist without causing symptoms at all.

Why?

Because pain is a protective experience influenced by many factors, including:
• The tissues involved
• Sensitivity of the nervous system
• Previous experiences
• Sleep and recovery
• Stress and emotions
• The situation and environment

This doesn't mean pain is “in your head.”

Pain is real.

It simply means that pain intensity alone cannot tell us exactly what is happening inside the body.

That's why good healthcare doesn't just ask: “How much does it hurt?”

It also asks: “Why might it hurt?”

Persistent, severe, worsening, or unusual pain deserves an appropriate evaluation.

Pain is important. Context matters.

Dr. Rubén D. García-Avilés, DC, MBA

---

Monday Topic: Pain is Inflammation Not a Diagnosis

🇺🇸 Pain tells you something is happening—but it doesn’t always tell you exactly what is happening.

Pain is a protective experience influenced by much more than the tissues themselves.

It can be affected by:
• Physical activity
• Previous experiences or injuries
• Sleep
• Stress
• Recovery
• Your overall health and environment

That’s one reason two people with similar physical findings can experience pain very differently.

And it’s also why the location or intensity of pain doesn’t automatically provide a diagnosis.

Pain deserves attention—but it also deserves context.

Instead of immediately fearing what pain means, the better question may be:

“What is contributing to this?”

Persistent, severe, worsening, or concerning symptoms should always be appropriately evaluated.

Understanding the problem comes before treating the problem.
