How many soups can one community make? The answer: we lost count!

Our annual Soup Potluck brought families together at Alga Norte Park in Carlsbad with homemade soups, breads, and c***r, while the children took over the playground. We kicked off our Annual Giving Campaign which has received tremendous support so far!

At Sanderling Waldorf School, the Flower Ceremony marks one of the most meaningful moments of the school year. ✨

On the first day of school, our 7th and 8th graders — the oldest children in the school — welcome the incoming first graders by presenting each one with a wildflower. It’s a small gesture that holds so much meaning: individuality and beauty, met with unity and belonging. ✨

As each flower joins the next, a bouquet forms — a living picture of what the first grader’s own journey through Sanderling will look like. Woven together with classmates, guided by those who came before, and sent off with an embrace to begin their first day. ✨

This ceremony is one half of an arc that closes in June with the Rose Ceremony, when this same first-grade class will give roses to our graduating eighth graders. Coming and going, giving and receiving — the rhythms that hold our community together. ✨

Where summer’s last breath meets the first steps of a new school year. ✨

SanderScouts Club marks this in-between week with a trip to Yosemite. This group is boulder climbing, paddling still waters, and soaking in the giant sequoias with towering cliffs. Planned a full year in advance, this trip kicks off a year of outdoor adventures for our SanderScouts. ✨

As the sun shines over our group in Yosemite meanwhile back in Vista, we are busy with final touches on campus! Wonder, teamwork, and connection is at every corner of our Sanderling Waldorf School community. ✨

Welcome Katherine Giglio, our new Pedagogical Director! ✨

After a thoughtful search with faculty, board, and parents, we found someone whose warmth, leadership, and Waldorf experience are exactly what our community envisioned. ✨

Katherine brings 30 years of Waldorf education experience across Texas, Colorado, and California, including over a decade as Early Childhood Director at The Waldorf School of San Diego. Grounded in both Waldorf pedagogy and psychology, she’s passionate about building supportive networks so students thrive inside and outside the classroom. ✨

She believes leading with warmth and integrity creates school communities where everyone belongs. We invite you to say hello in the comments! ✨

Why do we teach music in Waldorf Education? Through music, our students learn to connect, harmonize, and grow — musically, academically, and personally. ✨

Singing is a part of every day. We introduce pentatonic flute, diatonic flute, and recorder in Grades 1-3 and move onto strings in Grades 4-8 with music notation and multi-part choral works. Music isn’t just a subject at our school — it’s woven into every main lesson, festival celebration, and even class plays. ✨

We believe music shapes not just skilled musicians, but whole, grounded human beings. ✨

This isn’t a textbook diagram — it’s a page from a Sanderling Waldorf School student’s own main lesson book. Before ever touching a keyboard, our grades students take apart a real computer: studying the fan, the hard drive, the modem, every piece. Then they draw it, label it, and write about what they’ve learned, in their own hand. ✨

Only after that full understanding do they put it back together and use it. ✨

That’s the difference between using technology and understanding it. Low-tech, hands-on, deeply rooted learning — this is Waldorf education. ✨

“Would you like to pet a chicken?” ✨

That’s what a Sanderling Waldorf School student asked a group of touring parents mid-football game — walking straight over with a chicken in his arms, completely at ease.✨

No performance. No self-consciousness. Just a child comfortable in his own skin, comfortable with adults, comfortable sharing something delightful with visitors. ✨

That same groundedness shows up in unexpected ways. One Sanderling parent shares that her son loves baseball, football — and knitting. No contradiction there. At Sanderling, handwork is part of the curriculum for every child, building focus, patience, and pride alongside the sports they love. ✨
