This toolkit supports school counselors in helping Multilingual/English Learners navigate pathways to graduation. Written by researcher Dr. Laurie Olsen, the toolkit supports implementation of the California English Learner Roadmap policy as a framework to guide practice in school districts across the state. Course 1 Units 1–7 are available for school systems that are implementing Secondary Systematic ELD. This course is tailored to meet the needs of new-to-English students in grades 7–12. Language instruction spirals from unit to unit so newcomers build a solid bank of basic vocabulary and grammatical knowledge. Unit 8 will be available this fall. On June 2nd, twenty-two U.S. Senators sent a letter to Education Secretary Linda McMahon, opposing the federal government's move to close the Office of English Language Acquisition (OELA). They warn that the closure "will have devastating and lasting consequences for the education of more than five million English learner students nationwide." They also point out, "Federal law is not optional. School districts and states are obligated to serve English learners under Title III-A of ESEA, and to protect them from discrimination under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964." The senators are asking for a written response within 30 days to their questions. Read more: shorturl.at/ddE4G
