Kevin Rickard on Twitter

Okay Newtown family. I am asking a big favor. I have entered a contest with a company called Screencasitfy. They are offering up $3000.00 in donorschoose gift cards each week to one teacher for their school with the most retweets on twitter for a video talking about a video that a teacher made that had a big impact on staff or students. Every retweet counts as a vote. The one with the most retweets at the end of the week wins the $3000.00 Donors Choose gift cards. SO if you could jump on twitter and give me a retweet, it would be very helpful for our school. here is the link to the tweet. https://twitter.com/KevinRickard4/status/1206959809171464195

“This is my #WithOneVideo for @Screencastify It is about my news crew and their eagerness to be on video. It is a motivational factor and occasionally the videos are put up on youtube for parents to see. Every RT is a vote. Most votes wins $3K for @DonorsChoose PLS RT. @molsen14 https://t.co/dDYbx...

This week's garden club worked in the bus loop garden. We weeded, started removing junipers to make more vegetable growing spaces and a team worked in the green house tidying things up. The students picked tomatoes to take home as well.

Erosion Carries It Away!

Newtown students become city engineers to combat erosion in a lake front / river front setting. They complete the full design process with designing, testing, evaluating their solution to erosion and then redesign and retest. Its a messy job, but they love it.

Hampton Roads teachers turn to crowdsourcing sites for classroom supplies

http://www.pilotonline.com/news/education/vp-nw-teacher-donations-20190821-jrksgo62cfhr7gompszztrpafi-story.html

pilotonline.com Hampton Roads teachers are using a site called Donors Choose to supplement the supplies in their classroom. They crowdsource supplies so they don't have to pay out of pocket.

[08/21/19]   We are so excited that the school year is about to begin. Over the summer we introduced a new program to connect with our families and it was a blast. It was called Thirsty Thursday and was held every other week in the evenings. It focused on our Bus Loop Gardens project because the building was closed.
This Thursday we are focusing on our Courtyard Garden which has turned into a bit of a jungle. We would love to see several out for this Thirsty Thursday to help us get the courtyard gardens in shape for the new school year so it all looks great for the first day of school. Grab something at your favorite fast food restaurant and come on out at 5:00PM, stay as long as you like up until 8:00PM. Pull weeds, pick veggies and more. If you would prefer to come in the morning and work on your own or as a small group before it gets hot that works too. We would love to see you between 7:00 and 9:00 AM.
Looking forward to seeing a bunch of smiling faces. If enough come we can break into teams and work in the bus loop garden as well.

Here's a Back to School event you just can't pass up. Its a Hair Affair!!

Sadly no students and families showed for last night's Thirsty Thursday. Ebone Taylor, Cat Evans and her husband as well as Carol Johnson from Sons of Norway did and we got some weeding and picking taken care of. I am hoping for a big turn out at the next one on August 22nd. Stay tuned for more information.

[08/06/19]   Thursday evening from 6PM to 8PM come on out. Thirsty Thursday. We will meet in the bus loop and weed, water, pick veggies and more. Last time we had a crew of 11 and a lot of good conversation and fun was had. Bring your Wendys or KFC, eat, weed, pick and have fun. Hope to see you there.

Thank you to Yaret and Hazel and their families for showing up as well as Cat and Mike Evans. Cat Evans is one of our new third grade teachers. Carol Johnson from Sons of Norway was there to lend a hand as well. This newsletter will help catch you up. https://www.smore.com/4rqhb

Thirsty Thursday June 27th.

This was our first ever Thirsty Thursday. We had a good time. Yaret helped frame up the tomatoes to keep them off the ground. She filled up a planter box with dirt and planted potatoes by the door to the green house. She helped assemble a convertible work table, seating bench. Watered everything and took a handful of cherry tomatoes home. She also helped put up our Slow Food Grows Here sign. The next event is July 11th. 6PM to 8PM. All Staff, Students and Families are invited.

So much going on its hard to know where to start. We got our new garden hose from DonorsChoose. We also got our shed in and the kids work at building the base for the shed to sit on. They also started caulking in the panels to help prevent them from pulling out in the wind. Using a driver and caulking were first experiences for every one of them. It was hot, heat index at 97 but they had a blast.

Summer Garden Watering

The Courtyard and Bus Loop Gardens are really shaping up. To keep them alive over the summer break it is important to have a plan for at a minimum watering everything during dry spells. The goal here is to get some help, even if it’s just one day to keep things watered. If you sign up for a day and it’s raining, No Problem, your job is being done for you. if it rained in the last 24 hours it wouldn't hurt if you didn't come in for some reason as long as the person before you came in and watered.
There is no obligation to sign up for anything but if you feel like you could help out over the summer, even if it’s just one morning, great. Indicate on here what day you will come in. Watering should be done before noon. If you are summer staff and can help out, great, you'd be in here anyway right. I will make contact with anyone who signs up and make sure they know where everything is at.
I am working the STEM summer Camp at Rosemont and cannot be here in the mornings to water.
Thanks a bunch.
