During a conference I attended in December I won an iRover mobile stand for an Interactive Panel. I have launched a project up on DonorsChoose to get Newtown an Interactive Panel for this stand. This will be awesome for Newtown and for the students. Check out the link. Share out to family and friends and on your social media please. All donations matter no matter how small. http://bit.ly/panelproject

I am extremely disappointed on how Newtown Elementary and Transportation handled a situation on 1/3/18. My son got off the bus without his winter hat and told me a student on the bus took it off his head after he told him to stop and threw it in the bus. I called the school immediately after he got home and reported this. They told me there was NOTHING they could do and i would have to call transportation which i did immediately as well and reported it there. Transportation said they would call the bus driver and leave a message about my situation and hopefully have my sons hat back after her run. 2 weeks went by without anyyyyy phone calls. I finally called yesterday again (the school) and basically they acted like this was my first time mentioning this situation and would investigate it today. My son came down and made a statement about what happened and I got a call today about the hat. I was told I’m sorry but we don’t know where the hat is. It wasn’t on the bus. Of course it’s not NOW after 2 weeks. That’s why i called when it first happened so it could be returned. I don’t feel like this was taken seriously when another student bullied my son and took his hat off his head and threw it! I want answers.

We got our first pumpkin today from the school garden. Woo Hoo. Mr. Lawson put in our bunny barrier on Monday. Sorry bunnies. No more sharing of the carrots.

Learning Gardens, An Enriching Experience

March has brought life back into the Newtown Learning Gardens in the bus loop. New beds from the city landscapers. new apple trees from them as well and lots of new things from our supporters through donorschoose. The kids can't seem to get enough time out in the garden.

Learning Gardens, An Enriching Experience

The City Landscapers tore out our old beds in the corner and made us new beds with plenty of room to get folks around to work and cut down on the weeds. The junipers are gone. The mulch is gone and I replanted the cabbage I had dug up to make room for the new beds. So much more we can do with this new setup and a functioning greenhouse.

Here are some maps to show what we are looking forward to with our bus loop garden. The one on the right with six vegetable beds on a field of white is what the garden will be like by mid February. With the juniper cleared out, on the side with the shed we will be planting pumpkins, squash, gourds, and cucumbers where the junipers were to each side of the shed.

I’ve fallen behind in posting in here. Our District has launched a new initiative for scratch cooking. They want it tied to school based learning gardens. That means district support. Our school gets in on the first wave because we had an existing garden. They start with our upgrades hopefully next week. Stage one is putting a crushed stone floor in our greenhouse. We were out there today working on the roof and clearing it out for the new floor.

Newtown Elementary is preparing for a few upgrades to our bus loop vegetable garden. First stage is putting a crushed stone floor in the greenhouse. And now the greenhouse is ready for it.

Okay Newtown family. I am asking a big favor. I have entered a contest with a company called Screencasitfy. They are offering up $3000.00 in donorschoose gift cards each week to one teacher for their school with the most retweets on twitter for a video talking about a video that a teacher made that had a big impact on staff or students. Every retweet counts as a vote. The one with the most retweets at the end of the week wins the $3000.00 Donors Choose gift cards. SO if you could jump on twitter and give me a retweet, it would be very helpful for our school. here is the link to the tweet. https://twitter.com/KevinRickard4/status/1206959809171464195

“This is my #WithOneVideo for @Screencastify It is about my news crew and their eagerness to be on video. It is a motivational factor and occasionally the videos are put up on youtube for parents to see. Every RT is a vote. Most votes wins $3K for @DonorsChoose PLS RT. @molsen14 https://t.co/dDYbx...

This week's garden club worked in the bus loop garden. We weeded, started removing junipers to make more vegetable growing spaces and a team worked in the green house tidying things up. The students picked tomatoes to take home as well.

Erosion Carries It Away!

Newtown students become city engineers to combat erosion in a lake front / river front setting. They complete the full design process with designing, testing, evaluating their solution to erosion and then redesign and retest. Its a messy job, but they love it.

Hampton Roads teachers turn to crowdsourcing sites for classroom supplies

pilotonline.com Hampton Roads teachers are using a site called Donors Choose to supplement the supplies in their classroom. They crowdsource supplies so they don't have to pay out of pocket.

[08/21/19]   We are so excited that the school year is about to begin. Over the summer we introduced a new program to connect with our families and it was a blast. It was called Thirsty Thursday and was held every other week in the evenings. It focused on our Bus Loop Gardens project because the building was closed.
This Thursday we are focusing on our Courtyard Garden which has turned into a bit of a jungle. We would love to see several out for this Thirsty Thursday to help us get the courtyard gardens in shape for the new school year so it all looks great for the first day of school. Grab something at your favorite fast food restaurant and come on out at 5:00PM, stay as long as you like up until 8:00PM. Pull weeds, pick veggies and more. If you would prefer to come in the morning and work on your own or as a small group before it gets hot that works too. We would love to see you between 7:00 and 9:00 AM.
Looking forward to seeing a bunch of smiling faces. If enough come we can break into teams and work in the bus loop garden as well.

Here's a Back to School event you just can't pass up. Its a Hair Affair!!

Sadly no students and families showed for last night's Thirsty Thursday. Ebone Taylor, Cat Evans and her husband as well as Carol Johnson from Sons of Norway did and we got some weeding and picking taken care of. I am hoping for a big turn out at the next one on August 22nd. Stay tuned for more information.

[08/06/19]   Thursday evening from 6PM to 8PM come on out. Thirsty Thursday. We will meet in the bus loop and weed, water, pick veggies and more. Last time we had a crew of 11 and a lot of good conversation and fun was had. Bring your Wendys or KFC, eat, weed, pick and have fun. Hope to see you there.
