Chesapeake Bay Academy is the only independent school in Southeastern Virginia dedicated to serving students grades 1-12 with a variety of learning differences including:

- dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia
- ADD/ADHD
- twice exceptional learners (2e)
- language-based learning difficulties
- auditory processing deficits
- fine motor dysfunction
- developmental delays
- level 1 ASD
- other health impairments

CBA is licensed by the Virginia Department of Education to operate as a private day school for students with a Specific Learning Disability (SLD), Developmental Delays (DD), Speech and Language Impairments (SLI), Autism (AUT) and Other Health Impairments (OHI). Chesapeake Bay Academy does not have a therapeutic component and cannot accept students with emotional/behavioral disorders (ED), nor students with intellectual disabilities (ID). The application process is very thorough to ensure that our students are well served by the curriculum and services available here. We are excited to announce the expansion of CadetNet Virtual Academy! Art beyond the classroom 🎨

This past weekend, CBA art teacher Ms. Beatty exhibited at Norfolk Zine Fest at the Chrysler Museum of Art — with CBA students and families stopping by throughout the day to cheer her on.

The festival brought together artists, creators, and art lovers celebrating zines and independent work. Our students explored the museum, met local artists, and got a real taste of Norfolk's arts scene.

The best part? Seeing Ms. Beatty in her element as a practicing artist — sharing her own work and connecting with fellow creatives. Students got a firsthand look at how artists build community and put their work into the world.

Mission in Action.

As we settle into the rhythm of the school year, our mission is coming to life across Chesapeake Bay Academy.

Throughout all three divisions, we see students engaged in learning, teachers who are prepared and deeply invested in their students, and educators learning alongside one another—asking questions, collaborating, reflecting, and continually refining their approach.

This week’s Parent Preview Night gave families the opportunity to experience that work firsthand by walking in their students’ footsteps, visiting classrooms, meeting teachers, and gaining a deeper understanding of what learning at CBA looks and feels like.

Several weeks into the school year, we are seeing the hopes shared by our families begin to take shape: students reengaging with learning, experiencing success, building confidence, and discovering what is possible when learning is designed around their individual needs.

Personalized, engaged learning doesn’t happen by accident. It takes expertise, preparation, strong relationships, flexibility, and a commitment to continually ask: What does this student need to learn and thrive?

Students engaged. Educators growing. Families connected. A community working together for our students.

🇺🇸 Never Forget. 9.11.01

Mrs. Viar’s Makerspace class continued a meaningful CBA tradition as students gathered to commemorate the 25th anniversary of September 11—a day of remembrance, reflection, unity, and service.

Students honored the lives lost and the heroes who responded through the National Anthem, ceremonial folding of the American flag, and memorials they created together.

We were honored to welcome IT1 Woodie of the United States Navy, who reminded students that America’s strength following 9/11 came from people with different backgrounds, talents, and abilities working together toward a common purpose.

He connected that message to CBA: Our differences do not separate us; when brought together, they become our strength.

As we mark 25 years, our students showed that “Never Forget” is a commitment to carry forward the lessons of courage, service, respect, and unity.

IT1 Woodie closed with a powerful Navy expression: “We Have the Watch.”

đź“š Celebrating a CBA Young Author!

Angela W., a CBA seventh grader, recently had the exciting opportunity to participate in Dizzy-Con at Chesapeake Public Library as one of the event’s featured young authors!

While in fifth grade, Angela entered a creative writing contest inspired by Dizzy, Chesapeake Public Library mascot. Her original story, Dizzy’s Rainy Day, was selected for publication in Dizzy Bedtime Stories, a collection featuring stories from young writers throughout the community.

At Dizzy-Con, Angela took her work from the page to an audience, reading her story aloud to children and families and participating in an author signing. She even signed collectible trading cards featuring a cartoon illustration of herself as one of the featured authors!

Seeing her story published was already an incredible accomplishment, but having the opportunity to share her work with an audience made the experience even more meaningful.

We are so proud of Angela for sharing her creativity and voice with our community, and we’re grateful to Chesapeake Public Library for giving young writers opportunities to see their ideas celebrated.

Our September character trait is RESPECT!

Throughout the month, our Lower School students will explore what respect looks and sounds like—in the classroom, with friends and teachers, and throughout our CBA community.

We’re encouraging students to:
• Listen when others are speaking
• Treat people and our school environment with care
• Celebrate differences and appreciate different perspectives
• Use kind and thoughtful words
• Respect themselves by making positive choices and asking for help when needed

Families can continue the conversation at home by asking: “What did respect look like at school today?” or “How did you show respect to someone today?”

Together, we’re helping our students understand that respect starts with the everyday choices we make. 💜

According to Today’s Parent, self-esteem isn’t built by doing everything for a child—it develops when they receive the right support and are empowered to succeed independently.
