A professor has gone viral after claiming 32 of his 35 students failed a portion of a midterm exam after using artificial intelligence to complete the assignment without proofreading the results.

In a TikTok video, the professor explained that the discussion post was part of his students’ midterm. At first glance, the assignment appeared completely normal. However, he had secretly embedded the word “Madagascar” in white-colored text, making it invisible unless the text was copied and pasted.

According to the professor, the hidden word had nothing to do with the Industrial Revolution, the topic students were asked to discuss. He said the hidden text was designed to identify students who copied the entire prompt into an AI chatbot instead of writing their own response.

The professor said many students apparently pasted the assignment directly into AI, then copied the generated response into their submissions without reviewing it. As a result, the unrelated word “Madagascar” appeared throughout dozens of responses in strange and nonsensical ways.

“Madagascar has nothing to do with the Industrial Revolution,” the professor said. “It was more than obvious that they didn’t even go back and reread these responses.”

He said the unusual references immediately revealed which students had relied entirely on AI to complete the assignment. According to the professor, 32 of the 35 students across two classes failed that portion of the midterm.

The video has since sparked widespread discussion on social media about the growing use of AI in education. While many praised the professor’s creative method for detecting AI-generated work, others debated whether hidden prompts are an appropriate way to identify misuse. The incident has also fueled broader conversations about responsible AI use and the importance of reviewing AI-generated content before submitting it.

Week two summer school update: remember that student that Drew a bald picture of me last week? This week when we were practicing extending sentences she had the words teacher and announces and she was supposed to add other details to extend the sentence she excited to say Miss Morton the teacher announces she is a baldy because her hair fell out. GIRL 😂😂😂 genuinely do we have beef?! 😂

When she chooses to use her talents for good, she is actually incredibly talented. She freehand drew these of me and Ms. Figueroa from memory. 🤩

And we got to play with puppies at the end of the day today. 😍😍😍 I must admit it did lift my spirits.

Every year I teach 4th grade summer school and every year I'm nervous about how I'll be able to handle it. And every year I amaze myself and immediately form bonds with the kids. I was jokingly saying to one of my coworkers does she want to come teach 4th for the rest of the summer and the kids were like "no don't leave us" 🥹 don't worry you're stuck with me for the summer.
