Spontaneous opportunities for learning arise from unexpected occurrences, in this case right on our playground! The pre-k class noticed there were click beetles living in the mulch. This finding lead to a discussion about what they were, why they made the clicking noise, and a very popular beetle hunt during every outdoor playtime. Ms. Kathy expanded on their interest in the classroom and read aloud two books about beetles. She then displayed pictures of various beatles from the books and invited students to do their own observational drawing in the art center. This type of drawing is so important because it requires a deeper level of noticing attention to detail such as shapes, lines, and colors.

In class, we started out with brushes and three primary colors of paint. We ended up with a sensory-filled, color-mixing, creative experience. At PoPP, we strive to tap into a child's natural curiosity by embracing flexibility as learning occurs.

The water table continues to be one of the more popular items on the playground. Through scooping and pouring water, children are introduced to early math and science concepts (volume/capacity). As they move around the table, they are working on language and emotional growth as they learn to take turns and share space and items. Some children simply enjoy the calming effect of swirling their hands in water.
