As the United States marks Constitution Day and Citizenship Day on September 17, Batten University welcomed former Vice President and Provost Dr. Timothy G. O’Rourke back to campus for a conversation about the nation’s founding documents and their continuing relevance to American civic life.

Hosted by the Robert Nusbaum Center, O’Rourke’s Constitution Day presentation, “The Founders Can Still Help Us Find Our Way,” examined what the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution can teach Americans about citizenship, self-government and finding common ground.

In less than a month, alumni, families and friends will return to campus for a weekend of tradition, celebration and Marlin spirit as Batten University hosts its first Homecoming and Family Weekend, October 2–4.

While the University’s name is new, the traditions and connections that have brought generations of Marlins together remain at the heart of the celebration.

Batten University welcomed 33 new faculty members for the 2026–2027 academic year, strengthening its academic programs and expanding opportunities for students across the University.

The new faculty members were welcomed and introduced during a faculty pre-session that kicked off the fall 2026 semester. Three new faculty members join the Wesleyan College of Arts & Sciences, while 30 join the Sentara College of Health Sciences, bringing a wide range of expertise, experience and perspectives to the Batten University community.

Batten University Social Work faculty members Assistant Professor April Christman and Professor Dr. Benjamin Dobrin explored the opportunities and examined ethical considerations surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) in social work practice during a Page to Podium presentation on September 9. Their presentation, “AI and the Future of Social Work Practice,” was held from noon to 1 p.m. in the Athenaeum Forum and was presented by the H.C. Hofheimer II Library as part of its Fall 2026 Page to Podium series.

Through a collaborative mentorship initiative involving Batten University’s Athenaeum, Tidewater Collegiate Academy (TCA) and Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS), Batten students have an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of local elementary and middle school students while developing skills that will serve them well beyond the classroom.

Located on the campus of Batten University, TCA provides a unique setting for this partnership. Through the program, Batten students serve as “Bigs,” building consistent, caring relationships with TCA students who benefit from having a positive and encouraging mentor in their lives.
