Today we had a great piano recital and Wes did something really cool!! He asked the audience for any three notes and he would improv a song. He got C, B flat and F sharp. He’s an amazing musician!! 🎹🎶🎵

Westley Benson is a member of the 2023 Lab Cohort and a Teaching Artist with Soundscapes in Newport News, VA. We recently had the opportunity to meet Westley at the Southeast Practicum and had the pleasure of observing him teach!

Westley began playing piano and percussion at age 5 in church and at home. Part of a close knit and musical family, he grew up listening to many vocalists and singing groups in his extended family. He graduated from the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore Maryland with a degree in percussion performance. Upon finishing college, he began work as a counselor at the YMCA Mount Trashmore in Virginia Beach. There he became more interested in teaching and started music classes with the kindergarten enrichment program. In 2016, Westley joined the Doorway Singers as a bass and continues to sing with the group to this day in addition to being the Music Director. His passion for providing early exposure to music education in young students inspired Westley to found Westley Benson Music in 2018 and also teach music at many preschools in the Hampton Roads area. Westley currently works with Soundscapes as a Percussion Teaching Artist, Orchestra conductor, and Wind Band Director for the Peninsula Youth Orchestra.
