Our fall and holiday art classes and community offerings are now live and open for registration! 🍂 Along with our gallery and working solo studios, it’s our goal to provide lifelong support for the artist in each of us through therapeutic art practices and community connection. Why apply? The Mighty Minis brings together emerging and established artists for one of our favorite exhibitions of the year, celebrating original artwork on an approachable 8x8 scale and making collecting original art more accessible to our community.

Each selected artist will create three original works, with every piece priced at $125.
* 80 artists will be selected. May the odds be ever in your favor.

APPLICATION DEADLINE → September 14 at midnight
ARTIST NOTIFICATIONS → September 20
OPENING NIGHT → November 21
ON VIEW → Through mid-December

Congratulations to our most recent solo artist, Mike Lane- pictured here with a few of his NEW collectors! Exciting news 🌟 while Mikes show is coming to a close— we welcome Blue Heron Chapter of the Sumi-e Society of America where Mike serves on the Board of Directors. Sumi-e by Mike Lane

Blue Heron is a Hampton Roads-based non-profit organization founded in 1988 that fosters an appreciation for East Asian brush painting through workshops, lectures, and exhibitions.

This Friday, September 18, is the opening reception of ‘Autumn Light’ a group exhibition of 21 of Blue Heron’s members.

Betwixt & Between: Liminal Perspectives explores threshold spaces - the quiet, transitional moments where one state becomes another. Through traditional Asian watercolor techniques applied to East Coast landscapes, Mike Lane captures marshes, creek eddies, dunes meeting the sea, and seasonal shifts.

These liminal environments invite stillness and reflection. Subtle brushwork and balanced composition reveal harmony, complementarity, and the generative tension present in moments of change. Lane's work encourages viewers to pause, observe, and consider the beauty found within transition.
