SJA is so excited to welcome Mr. Nicholas Von Tersch as our new middle school Theology teacher and religious coordinator! ✝️

Mr. Von Tersch has lived in Chesapeake since 1990, and is the third of six children, all of whom went to St. Matthew’s Parochial School in VA Beach. Mr. Von Tersch earned a BS in Administration of Justice at UVA’s College at Wise. During his academic breaks, he was a substitute teacher for Chesapeake and Virginia Beach Public Schools. The time after completing his studies at UVA’s College at Wise was a period of religious discernment for Mr. Von Tersch. Through prayer and spiritual direction, he felt that Our Lord was calling him to religious life. Desiring to answer this call, he entered the Carmelite Monastery in Cody, WY, where he was a novice for nineteen months. Discerning that our Lord was not calling him to that community, he later worked as a Dorm Father, algebra teacher, and coach at St. Gregory the Great Academy in Elmhurst, PA. Still feeling drawn to religious life, he was eventually led to Our Lady of the Annunciation of Clear Creek Abbey, a traditional Benedictine community in Hulbert, OK, where he remained for five years. Discerning that Our Lord was not calling him to remain there permanently, he again returned home. Having tasted, however, that the Lord is “sweeter than honey to my mouth,” he decided to continue his religious formation by beginning a Master’s Degree program in Theology. He completed his MA in Systematic Theology from Christendom College’s Graduate School of Theology. After completing his MA and a short stint in the corporate world, Mr. Von Tersch joined us at SJA, and is very excited to be back in the classroom doing what he loves: teaching Theology! When he is not at prayer or study, he loves to hike, fish, and play chess. His favorite sports are football and basketball, and he is active at St. Benedict's Parish in Chesapeake, where he serves on the Parish Council, is involved with the Knights of the Altar, and sings in the choir. He is looking forward to getting to know all of his future students!

We are thrilled to welcome Mrs. Amy Jackson as our new 5th grade teacher!📖

Mrs. Jackson joins us after 32 years teaching 6th grade science. A graduate of ODU, Mrs. Jackson is married with two daughters: one a VT Hokie, the other a UVA Hoo. Outside the classroom, she enjoys watching football, kickboxing, book club, long walks, and hunting down a great bargain. A cat lover at heart, she’s also happiest on a beach or traveling somewhere new. With her experience, energy, and love of adventure, Mrs. Jackson is ready to make this a great year.
