🌿 Little Bodies, Big Movements 🌿

Through active play, our youngest learners are developing important gross motor skills while discovering the joy of movement. Every jump, pull, step, and stretch helps build strength, coordination, confidence, and independence.

Big adventures happen when little bodies are free to move 💚☀️

Our Elementary students enjoyed a memorable field trip to the Aquinnah Cliffs and beach, where they explored the natural beauty and cultural significance of this iconic Island landmark. As guests on the ancestral lands of the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) and through observation, discussion, and hands-on discovery, the trip connected classroom learning to the rich history, geology, and coastal environment in an incredibly fun way for the children.

Children are naturally drawn to transformation, and the butterfly life cycle is one of the most fascinating examples in nature. This activity creates meaningful and memorable experiences, while sparking a curiosity that becomes the starting point for early science learning.

The Montessori Long Chain of Ten is an engaging material designed to help young learners understand foundational math concepts in a hands-on way. This material builds on the Montessori pillar of sensory-based learning and helps children gain skills in counting, skip counting, and early multiplication. Children begin by counting each bead bar individually, labeling every 10th bead with a number tag (10, 20, 30, and beyond). Eventually, children understand that each bead bar represents 10 units, allowing them to skip counting easily. This work reinforces their understanding of sequential numbers, counting skills, and more.

Many thanks to these high school students and staff from Martha's Vineyard Regional High School - MVRHS for selecting VMS for today's Give Back Day! This annual island-wide community service event allows the entire student body and staff at MVRHS to take part in volunteer work at various nonprofit and civic organizations across the island, replacing standard academic classes for the day. We are so grateful for your spring cleanup and beautification help today at our community school!

As part of its 50th anniversary celebration at Big Night Out on May 8th, VMS honored two of its founders, Robert “Captain Bob” Douglas (posthumously) and Charlene Douglas with the 2026 Community Impact Award in recognition of their visionary leadership and lasting contributions to the Island. Their dedication to Montessori principles, child-centered education, and community connection laid the foundation for a school that has nurtured generations of learners.

Captain Bob and Charlene Douglas were instrumental in those early years. Not only did they send their children to VMS, but they both served on the Board of Trustees, and opened their home at Arrowhead Farm to the school for six years. And in an extraordinary act of generosity, they donated their ship, Ayuthia—whose sale ultimately allowed the school to purchase its current home in Vineyard Haven.

A plaque in their honor will hang at the school as a lasting tribute to their meaningful impact.

As Vineyard Montessori School celebrates its 50th year, the school looks ahead with gratitude for its past and a continued commitment to serving island families for generations to come.
