Today in Introduction to Construction, students put their measuring skills to work!

After learning about the customary and metric systems, students practiced measuring real classroom and shop objects using tape measures and meter sticks. They worked with whole inches, 1/2”, 1/4”, 1/8”, centimeters, and millimeters while comparing estimates to actual measurements.

The big focus today was accuracy, because in construction, even a small measuring mistake can create a much bigger problem later.

Our middle school Automation & Robotics students took on the Paper Table Challenge using just 10 sheets of printer paper and 50 cm of masking tape.

Teams had to plan, build, test, and evaluate their designs using the Engineering Design Process. The goal was simple: build a freestanding paper table that could support as much weight as possible.

One group’s design held an incredible 9.16 pounds before failing! 💪📄

A great example of how creativity, teamwork, testing, and engineering can turn simple materials into something surprisingly strong.

Today in Automation & Robotics, students put the Engineering Design Process into action with our Paper Table Challenge!

Each team was limited to just 10 sheets of printer paper and 50 cm of masking tape to design and build a freestanding table that could support as much weight as possible.

Students had to work within real engineering criteria and constraints, develop a plan, build a prototype, and then test their design to see how it performed.

One group’s paper table held an impressive 10.99 pounds before finally failing!

That’s a lot of weight for only 10 sheets of paper and 50 cm of tape.

Today in Principles of Engineering, students learned how engineers use fair testing and variables to make reliable decisions.

Using paper airplanes, students tested how adding one paper clip to the nose affected flight distance. They identified the:

* Independent variable — number of paper clips
* Dependent variable — flight distance
* Controlled variables — things kept the same, such as the airplane, thrower, starting line, and testing area

Students completed multiple trials, recorded their data, and compared the results to see whether the added weight improved or reduced performance.

A big takeaway from today:

Change one. Measure one. Keep the rest the same.

This is the same process engineers use when testing and improving real-world designs.

Thinking Like Architects in CEA!

Today, our Civil Engineering & Architecture students took on the role of architects and redesigned our classroom from a top-down view!

Students had to think beyond simply making the room look good. Their designs had to consider:

Function — Does the space work?
Form — What should it look and feel like?
People — Who will use the space?
Elements of Design — Line, shape, form, space, texture, and color
Principles of Design — Balance, proportion, rhythm, emphasis, and unity

They also had to work within real-world constraints, including keeping existing doors and windows in place while creating safe walking paths, student work areas, storage, technology spaces, and an effective instructional area.

The goal wasn’t to create the prettiest drawing, it was to make thoughtful design decisions and be able to explain WHY they made them.

That’s what architects do: identify problems, work within constraints, and design better spaces for the people who use them. 🏗️📐

Today in 8th Grade Engineering , students put the engineering design process into action with our Paper Airplane Testing Lab!

Students designed two different paper airplanes, conducted multiple test flights, measured the distance of each flight, and recorded their results in Google Sheets. They then used their data to compare average distance, longest flight, and consistency.

The final challenge was to take the weaker design, make an improvement, and test it again to see if the data showed that the redesign actually worked.

Today’s big idea: Engineers don’t just say, “It worked.” They test, collect data, make improvements, and test again.

Today in Introduction to Construction, students took on the challenge of figuring out who builds a house and in what order.

Working in teams, students organized construction career cards to create what they believed was the correct sequence from an empty lot to a finished home. Along the way, they had to think about how careers like surveying, excavation, concrete, framing, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, drywall, finishing, and inspection all work together.

The best part was hearing them debate their choices, explain their reasoning, and realize that construction is a team effort involving many different skilled careers.

Hands-on learning, problem solving, communication, and a little friendly disagreement made for a great day in class!

In Principles of Engineering, we’re learning how systems work by identifying their inputs, processes, outputs, and feedback.

Today’s example was a little more exciting than something out of a textbook. 🤘

🎵 Input: Metallica’s One playing
⚙️ Process: The system detects and interprets the sound
💡 Output: The LED lights react and light up with the music
🔁 Feedback: The system continuously responds as the sound changes

Engineering is all around us, even when Metallica is involved!

Today my engineering students were taking on the Spaghetti & Marshmallow Tower Challenge!

Working in teams, they had one goal: build the tallest free-standing tower using only spaghetti noodles and marshmallows. No tape. No string. No glue. Just teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving.

The challenge wasn’t just about building the tallest tower, it was about learning the engineering design process by brainstorming, testing ideas, failing, improving, and trying again.

It was so exciting to see each team think like engineers and build their towers that! 35 3/8 inches was the tallest tower.

MedBot Challenge in Action!

Our high school engineering students have been hard at work tackling the MedBot Challenge—programming their robots to navigate a hospital layout, deliver “medications” to multiple patient rooms, and return safely to the start zone.

This project pushes students to think like real engineers:
✔️ Problem-solving
✔️ Precision programming
✔️ Real-world automation concepts

In this video, you’ll see one of our teams working through the challenge—testing, adjusting, and improving their robot to complete the task successfully. It’s not always perfect on the first try, but that’s where the real learning happens!

These are the kinds of hands-on experiences that prepare our students for careers in engineering, robotics, and advanced manufacturing.
