Growing onions from seed has been a game changer for me. I used to plant my onions from bulbs and they never really amounted to much. Now I plant from seed.

I buy fresh onion seed in the fall, plant the seeds for the appropriate time for your planting zone, then transplant out your seedlings. Make sure you fertilize well and once the onions start bulbing out you have to ensure they get plenty of consistent watering!

Always make sure that you’re planting onions for your daylight hours as well!

Check out my onion seed starting post here.

The entire Seed Starting Mastery series is officially live.

From radishes (yes, we went there first) to leafy greens and beyond, this series breaks down:
• What’s worth starting from seed
• What’s better direct-sown
• And how to avoid common seed-starting headaches

If seed starting has ever felt confusing, overwhelming, or just not worth the effort, this series was written for you.

Grab a cup of coffee, head to the blog, and start at the beginning or jump to the crop you care about most.

Why start Seed Starting Mastery with radishes?

Because technically… you shouldn’t start them indoors at all 😅
Radishes hate being transplanted.

They want to be direct-seeded and left alone!

So why lead with them?

Because radishes teach the rules of seed starting:
✔️ Not every seed belongs in a tray
✔️ Roots matter more than leaves
✔️ Timing > fancy equipment
✔️ Sometimes “doing less” works better

In the first Seed Starting Mastery post, we talk about why radishes break the seed-starting mold, and why that makes them the perfect place to begin.

Read the radish post here:

Radishes are the gardening equivalent of training wheels; they germinate fast, grow quickly, and forgive almost every rookie mistake.

I’ve spent the better part of December being sick. Not ideal but I had plenty of time to think and write when I felt up to it. One of the things I found myself thinking about and planning was, “what am I growing this year” and what seeds do I need to start? Starting seeds is something I love to do and I always plant more than I need. But it also got me thinking about beginner gardeners and finding good comprehensive information to help them. Yes, I’m on all the Facebook gardening pages and personally, I don’t find them useful at all.

One hundred people telling you their opinion is not helpful.

So if you’ve ever started seeds and thought, “Why is this so much harder than people make it sound?”, you’re not doing anything wrong.

A lot of seeds don’t want to be treated the same way, and most seed packets don’t explain that part.

That’s why I put together my Seed Starting Mastery blog series. It’s me walking you through what I’ve learned over years of starting seeds, which ones need cold, which ones need warmth, and which ones just need to be left alone. It will be 10 posts, released every week, progressing from the easiest to the most difficult seeds to start.

No fancy setups. Just clear step by step guidance,so you can stop guessing and start getting better results.

This is free content that I wanted to share with you, you don’t have to buy a thing, well maybe some seeds! All I ask is that you read and share them if you’re interested! That’s it! If you hate reading you can always ask Siri to read it to you as well.

If you want to feel more confident starting seeds this season, I’d love for you to start here. 👉

Over the next 10 weeks (plus one epic bonus cheat-sheet post), I’m going to walk you through starting the most common vegetables from seed — in perfect order from dead-easy to expert-level gardener!

💸 Did you know big tech is watching what you buy… and charging you differently because of it? 😳

More Perfect Union just released a revealing video showing exactly how grocery apps and online stores track your shopping habits and tweak prices based on what they think you’ll pay. It’s a little creepy and a lot expensive.

The good news? You don’t have to play by their rules. Growing even some of your own food is a simple way to take back control, save money, and beat the algorithm at its own game.
