The Department of Global Interdisciplinary Studies condemns the racist murders of Asian Americans in Atlanta this week. The murders represent the most recent example of hatred and violence directed against people of Asian descent here in the United States and elsewhere. We acknowledge that these events are the manifestation of misogynistic, racist stereotyping that have their roots in the longstanding demonization of Asian women. We want to recognize that these attacks are a continuation of a long history of violence and exclusion that has been driven by inflammatory rhetoric targeting Asian Americans over the last year. Our Department has zero tolerance for such attitudes.
We stand in solidarity with the Asian American community and condemn the hate crimes perpetrated against them. In the face of these attacks that target a specific community, we acknowledge our collective responsibility to support Villanovans who are of Asian descent. Our hearts go out to those of you who are feeling vulnerable and hurt and we invite you to reach out to Department faculty or staff for any way we can provide support.
