I just got off the phone with one of our presenters, and honestly… he ministered to me.

Right at a time when the weight of putting on this conference feels heavy.

Planning, coordinating, building, budgeting, carrying vision—it can be a lot. And today, I needed that reminder.

He reminded us that God chose us for this work.

That serving people, equipping families with the skills to grow food, steward land, build community, and survive uncertain times is not just “conference work”… it’s Kingdom work.

Because if it makes God’s people stronger, wiser, and better prepared, then it matters to God.

He reminded us that when we can’t figure it out, our job is to seek God and trust Him. Because if this is His assignment, then provision has to follow purpose.

And what hit me the hardest was when he reminded us how our daughter, Kayaneh, is tied to all of this.

How this land bears her name.
How this work carries her legacy.
How this space was dedicated to serving in her honor and in remembrance of her.

That stopped me.

Because sometimes in the stress of building, you can forget the deeper “why.”

Today was a reminder.

This work is bigger than us.

And we are grateful to be chosen for it.

One thing people don’t talk enough about when buying land: maintenance can get expensive fast.

Our pond recently rose about 2 feet above the desired level because the drain pipe clogged. The water got so high it completely surrounded the dock.

Instead of panicking, Ghazi got resourceful and dug a shallow trench to safely lower the water level and allow it to flow off the backside of the dam until we can address the real issue.

The estimates to properly repair the pond? $12,000–$20,000.

That’s the part of land ownership people don’t always see.

A poorly maintained pond can become a public health hazard and in some cases can even lead to fines. And if you neglect maintenance long enough, the repair bill can hit like a second mortgage.

Land will teach you quickly that maintenance is not optional.

And here’s the truth: successful land ownership isn’t about knowing everything. It’s about being resourceful enough to solve problems and wise enough to build relationships with people who know what you don’t.

Because land can build wealth… or become a money pit.

The difference is stewardship.

That’s one of the real conversations we have at the Black Homesteader Conference.

Confession: as a night-shift, chai tea latte with coconut milk kind of girl who NEVER drinks coffee, it honestly never crossed my mind that a conference starting at 8 AM absolutely needed coffee ☕😂

But the previous attendees made sure we understood that real quick.

Apparently, people without coffee can bite 😅

And we listened.

This year, we made sure to have a coffee vendor set up right next to the check-in area so you can grab your cup, wake up properly, and be ready to take in all of this good homesteading, land stewardship, and survival knowledge.

Because learning how to grow food, protect your land, build wealth, and become more self-sufficient is important…

…but learning it caffeinated is apparently non-negotiable 😂

Some kids climb jungle gyms…

Ours climbs piles of soil 😂🌱

Little Ghazi found himself a throne on top of our favorite raised bed mix while we were out redesigning another space on the land.

And honestly? That feels about right.

Because around here, dirt is normal.
Garden beds are playgrounds.
And building food systems is just part of childhood.

People ask how kids get interested in homesteading…

Simple.

You let them be part of it.

Let them dig.
Let them plant.
Let them make a mess.
Let them see the process.

One day it’s play.

The next day it’s knowledge.

And before you know it… they understand that food doesn’t start at the grocery store.

It starts in the soil. 🌱
