Young 10-year-old Chloe made a perfect cone in her pottery class tonight!

Coning is a very important process in throwing. It helps re-center the clay and reassures the riddance of any air pockets that might not have been taken care of during wedging. Without coning, you could end up with a crack in a piece, a wonky shape, and uneven walls.

One thing to be mindful of when coning is getting to a consistent and tall shape, making sure to apply pressure from the base and more as you go up, and coning up the clay slowly and little by little. This prevents losing a good amount of your clay due to pressure and speedy movement.
