Every Friday, we will introduce you to a new faculty or staff member. Joy is a theme we are embracing this year as a community so we asked them what has brought them joy so far this school year. Welcome to Green Hedges, Ms. Lavallee!

Montessori and Grade 3 celebrated International Day of Peace today. Montessori students sang "Light a Candle for Peace" while Grade 3 created drawings and messages of peace for our community to read.

Our Middle School cross country and soccer teams are off to a promising start this fall! Go Dragons!

Grade 1 students conducted a gummy bear experiment to see how different types of liquids alter the candy. They used the scientific method to record their observations and conclusions.

The mystery bag is a long standing tradition in Montessori! Each week, students bring in an item tied to the letter they are studying. They must give clues about their mystery item until students guess what it is. It is a wonderful way to teach letter sounds and engage the whole class!

Grade 6 worked on their improv skills during Performing Arts class this week!

This week is National Arts in Education Week! The arts have always been an integral part of a Green Hedges education and we are fortunate to have amazing specials teachers who demonstrate the power of the arts in education.

Inspired by Gustav Klimt’s “Portrait of Adele Blocher-Bauer I,” Grade 3 students are working on their own works of art by drawing figures and adding patterns and gold foil to them.

Middle School students read “A Long Walk to Water” as part of their summer reading and today were fortunate to hear a presentation from Water for South Sudan, the organization featured in the book.
Students asked thoughtful questions about the work of the nonprofit and also participated in conversations in their classroom about the book and Salva Dut, Water for South Sudan’s founder.

We kicked off our buddies program at today’s Closing. Older students were paired with students in Grades 1 - 4 and it was a great opportunity for them to get to know one another and foster cross-grade connections. There will be plenty of opportunities throughout the school year for our buddies to meet one another!

With our Montessori 3-year olds starting today, our school community is officially complete! The 3-year olds had a busy morning in their classrooms and at their first music class and library class of the year!

A big Green Hedges welcome to our Montessori 4-year olds! Their first day was full of learning, play, and joy!
Many great memories were made in just the first three days of school! We look forward to many more in the days and weeks to come.

Hooray for the second day of school! From Grade 6 students teaching Grade 5 students how to properly hoist the flag to Grade 1’s first music class, there was plenty of learning and engagement all throughout campus today!

What a great first day of school for our students and teachers! From reuniting with returning friends and meeting new ones to learning routines and expectations, students are eager and excited for another great school year!

See you tomorrow, Green Hedges families! We can’t wait to welcome you back for another great school year!

Wait until you see the amazing transformation of the entrance to Kilmer Hall when we open our doors on Wednesday! Thanks to a Parent Association grant, Ms. Erickson and Ms. Chase have spent the summer designing the space to truly reflect our school and all that it stands for! We can’t wait for you to see it!

Faculty members who received summer grants from the Parent Association presented on the great work they’ve been doing this summer to enhance the curriculum in their classrooms. Thank you to the Parent Association for supporting the work of our faculty!

Alums and past faculty! Let us know what you’ve been up to!

A little less than a month to go before the Class of 2024 starts their final year at Green Hedges!

Congratulations to our newest Montessori Kindergarten graduates! We celebrated our 18 students and their completion of the three year Montessori cycle. Our graduates also heard from our two Grade 8 Lifers on what they can look forward to in their Green Hedges journey.
We wish them all the best in Grade 1 next year!

The Grade 4 classroom transformed into an artist gallery this afternoon as students researched and wrote about an artist and came to life as that artist to answer questions about their life, works of art, and their inspiration. Artists included Alma Thomas, Peter Bruegel, Salvador Dali, Claude Monet, Mary Cassatt, and Georgia O’Keefe.

Grade 6 presented their science projects on the different types of coral reef fish which live amongst or close to coral reefs. Students explained the characteristics of their particular fish and the role the fish plays in the reef ecosystem.

Students enjoyed field day festivities this afternoon! The afternoon concluded with the Grade 8 bubble gum competition!

We are honored to announce that this year’s Grade 8 graduation speaker is Maya Glenn ‘12. Maya attended Green Hedges School from 2010-2012, along with her two sisters Kyra Glenn and Celina Glenn. She matriculated into Episcopal High School and then continued her studies at Northwestern University, graduating with honors in 2020.
Currently, she is a Sociology Doctoral student at the University of Michigan--Ann Arbor, where her research has received funding from the National Science Foundation and the Ford Foundation. In the future, Maya intends to become a mental health researcher and therapist.

Middle School Flag Football and Tennis had a great spring season! Congratulation to our students for their hard work, perseverance, and sportsmanship throughout the season.
Thank you to Parker Photography for the amazing flag football photos!

Congratulations to Grade 1 on its wonderful production of “Go Fish” today! Grade 1’s play was the last of our productions this year and we couldn’t be more proud of all that our students have accomplished on stage this year!

The time honored tradition of the butterfly release in Grade 1 continues! Grade 1 learned all about the lifecycle of a butterfly and today released the butterflies they have been studying!

Congratulations to Grade 3 - Grade 8 students on their “Pajama Party” spring concert performance! Each grade showcased their band and vocal talents and students also performed solos and duets throughout the evening!

We hope to see our Class of 2019 alums back on campus next Wednesday afternoon! We are so proud of all that they’ve accomplished as they head off to their post-secondary school adventures this fall.

Grade 3 students have been working hard for months researching facts and preparing presentations about their chosen state for the State Fair. Yesterday, faculty, parents, and students enjoyed hearing fun facts about each state from our Grade 3 experts!

Congratulations, Montessori - Grade 2 students on a spirited pajama-themed Spring Concert yesterday!
