OpenArt Studio

Each artist at OpenArt Studio develops a rigorous foundation that enables him/her to be a conceptual thinker and individual inventor.

OpenArt Studio is a private art studio offering classes in portfolio development and art foundations. Our philosophy is that every student must begin with the fundamentals in order to discover his or her individual expressive potential.

The Fall semester has begun! Spots are still available in most classes, but sign up soon before they run out!

08/10/2018

Summer camp students made mixed media peacocks using acrylic paints and tissue papers. Summer is coming to a close, which means that fall registration is now open. Sign up today!

07/22/2018

Our campers made these mixed-media still lifes, using paints for the vases and handmade prints for the flowers. The camps will soon be coming to a close, but we've opened up our fall class registration! Register before August 3rd and the registration fee will be waived.

07/20/2018

Our campers have had a lot of fun with their art projects! They've each made a model of a dream land and they've sculpted ice cream cones with paper mache.

06/30/2018

Summertime's here, and with it lots of bright light and opportunities for painting 'en plein air'. It also marks the start of camp season. Our camps combine the arts and old-fashioned summer fun for a wonderful creative experience for any child. Registration is still open for the next two sessions, so sign up today!

06/28/2018

Students are hard at work learning contrast and value in these first few days of summer camp. There's still time to enroll your child in the next sessions of camp! Stop by or visit our website to pick up a registration form.

06/22/2018

School might have ended, but our juniors are still working hard on their portfolios for college! They are going to spend their summer semester making great art. Summer registration is still open for all ages, but hurry, as it is about to start.

06/20/2018

Action painting is very freeing. The fact that it emphasizes movement and the creation of the artwork as opposed to a finished product leads to interesting results, because it liberates the artist (or artists, in this case) from having to worry about the ending.

06/17/2018

This week, students worked on a collaborative project using paint and string to create a Pollock-inspired work of abstract expressionism.

05/31/2018

A pretty interesting mixed media piece in progress. It's made mostly of torn magazines.

05/29/2018

There's been a lot of finished Portfolio Prep artwork this week! Come visit the studio and check it out.

05/26/2018

Just a quick reminder that we will be closed on May 27th and 28th. All classes will resume as usual afterward. Have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend!

05/24/2018

Mirrors add an interesting element to still-life (or, really, any) paintings. They add a little bit of repetition where there normally wouldn't be any.

05/22/2018

A little sketch on the table, in Sharpie. Sometimes art can be found in unexpected places.

05/19/2018

The size of a surface can really affect the impact the final painting makes on its audience. Smaller canvases can be filled with dense detail more easily, but bigger ones call attention even from far away.

05/10/2018

Students like to use cardboard for the myriad textures and effects it can produce. It can be peeled back to expose the ribbed inside, folded or curled into interesting, sculptural shapes, painted on, drawn on, ripped, crinkled, or glued together.

05/07/2018

Dry-medium drawings are impressive works of art, even though they aren't displayed as often as grand paintings. Come check out our charcoal and pencil wall at the studio!

05/03/2018

Ordinary things, like driftwood, can look like landscapes when you zoom in closely. What do you see in this picture?

05/01/2018

Students from the Expressionists class created an abstract artwork by tracing themselves onto a large piece of paper, then painting the overlapping forms in vibrant colors.

04/29/2018

We've changed up our lobby gallery. Stop by and take a look at all the wonderful artwork by OpenArt students!

04/26/2018

04/17/2018

Still-life subjects, viewed from an unconventional angle. Which one would you pick to draw?

04/14/2018

The edge of a canvas can say a lot about the artist who painted it. Fragmented color, left over from the main image, show the process behind the art.

03/24/2018

We hope you are having a wonderful Spring Break! OpenArt Studio will be closed from 2:30 today through Thursday, March 29. There will be class for Portfolio Prep students on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, but Expressionist and Art Foundations classes will only resume on Monday, April 2.

03/10/2018

Students used mixed media techniques, particularly collage, to create interesting, mosaic-like still lifes.

02/17/2018

Forms from nature can look almost abstract when you look at them from a different angle. Try taking another look at an everyday houseplant or tree, and see a composition in life.

02/14/2018

Negative space is a key component of printmaking. Since the technique relies on removing, instead of adding, value to a page, artists have to take negative space into careful consideration. The Expressionist class used color in their negative space to add a vibrant twist to their pieces.
Summer camp registration is open (check out our website for forms and more information)! Sign up quickly to get a spot for your child.

02/11/2018
