The Fall semester has begun! Spots are still available in most classes, but sign up soon before they run out!

Summer camp students made mixed media peacocks using acrylic paints and tissue papers. Summer is coming to a close, which means that fall registration is now open. Sign up today!

Our campers made these mixed-media still lifes, using paints for the vases and handmade prints for the flowers. The camps will soon be coming to a close, but we've opened up our fall class registration! Register before August 3rd and the registration fee will be waived.

Our campers have had a lot of fun with their art projects! They've each made a model of a dream land and they've sculpted ice cream cones with paper mache.

Summertime's here, and with it lots of bright light and opportunities for painting 'en plein air'. It also marks the start of camp season. Our camps combine the arts and old-fashioned summer fun for a wonderful creative experience for any child. Registration is still open for the next two sessions, so sign up today!

School might have ended, but our juniors are still working hard on their portfolios for college! They are going to spend their summer semester making great art. Summer registration is still open for all ages, but hurry, as it is about to start.

Action painting is very freeing. The fact that it emphasizes movement and the creation of the artwork as opposed to a finished product leads to interesting results, because it liberates the artist (or artists, in this case) from having to worry about the ending.

This week, students worked on a collaborative project using paint and string to create a Pollock-inspired work of abstract expressionism.

Mirrors add an interesting element to still-life (or, really, any) paintings. They add a little bit of repetition where there normally wouldn't be any.

A little sketch on the table, in Sharpie. Sometimes art can be found in unexpected places.

The size of a surface can really affect the impact the final painting makes on its audience. Smaller canvases can be filled with dense detail more easily, but bigger ones call attention even from far away.

Students like to use cardboard for the myriad textures and effects it can produce. It can be peeled back to expose the ribbed inside, folded or curled into interesting, sculptural shapes, painted on, drawn on, ripped, crinkled, or glued together.

Dry-medium drawings are impressive works of art, even though they aren't displayed as often as grand paintings. Come check out our charcoal and pencil wall at the studio!

Ordinary things, like driftwood, can look like landscapes when you zoom in closely. What do you see in this picture?

Students from the Expressionists class created an abstract artwork by tracing themselves onto a large piece of paper, then painting the overlapping forms in vibrant colors.

The edge of a canvas can say a lot about the artist who painted it. Fragmented color, left over from the main image, show the process behind the art.

We hope you are having a wonderful Spring Break! OpenArt Studio will be closed from 2:30 today through Thursday, March 29. There will be class for Portfolio Prep students on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, but Expressionist and Art Foundations classes will only resume on Monday, April 2.

Students used mixed media techniques, particularly collage, to create interesting, mosaic-like still lifes.

Forms from nature can look almost abstract when you look at them from a different angle. Try taking another look at an everyday houseplant or tree, and see a composition in life.

Negative space is a key component of printmaking. Since the technique relies on removing, instead of adding, value to a page, artists have to take negative space into careful consideration. The Expressionist class used color in their negative space to add a vibrant twist to their pieces.
