A few weeks back I had a lovely visit with these wonderful folks! Wayne and June owned Music Masters in Tysons Corner from 1997-2019. It was a music lesson studio and music retail shop off Tyco road and route 7. When I moved back to the northern Va area in 2003 I was looking for work so I went to the local library and borrowed their yellow pages and photocopied the section on music stores and lesson studios which included Music Masters. With address in hand, I drove out there one day unannounced and introduced myself to Wayne and he offered me a job teaching. I was ecstatic and also super nervous, inexperienced and super insecure. I ended up finding home and solidarity with everyone at this studio. And no matter what other jobs I took, I always kept my teaching days here. I stayed with Music Masters until their closing in 2019. This was kind of a go-to place for me and a bunch on other 20 something year old musicians who needed a similar place to call home. If you’ve ever seen the show Cheers, Music Masters was a lot like that show. Often I would go there on my days off to practice and just sit and talk with Wayne about history or current events, and other teachers would do the same. We were always welcome and it was always a great hang out. Sometimes I’d stay there all night to practice Wayne would find me there in morning when he opened up. Once a month Wayne organized a bowling night for the teachers, and he loved smoking meats so he would throw a barbecue at his house once a year. I would go to Wayne for advice and help with so many problems I was having in my life. He was and is an honorable man, a dear friend and a paternal figure to me.
It was such an honor to have Wayne and June visit our studio in Vienna, in an amazing full circle kind of way. We have modeled much of what we do after their example of loving service and integrity. I am profoundly grateful to Wayne and June for their years of service in building the musical and artistic foundation of the Vienna community as well as helping all of us teachers find home and direction!!
