I have always advised my students that if someone plays a piece 100 times slowly, they can then play it as fast as they wish. The metronome, as frustrating as it might be, is a tool to help the student to discipline oneself to do this, starting at a slow tempo and slowly working the speed to an impressively fast, scolding hot, tempo. This works every time if the student has patience.
