New class offering: Intro to Bookbinding! 📚

On July 26th, students will learn the introductory art of bookbinding while creating two different style books. We will begin by building signatures (a grouping of pages) that will be hand sewn into book blocks. The book blocks will then be encased in a finished cover. A second book will be designed using the piano hinge method. Each book can be further designed and personalized to meet the needs of the student. Both styles of bookbinding offer a great beginner’s experience into the artistry of bookbinding! Instructed by Geraldine Johnson of .

Did you know you can make beautiful prints by using a light-sensitive chemistry, found objects, and sunshine? ☀️

On July 14th, explore the historic photographic process of cyanotypes while transferring unique prints onto fabric! This vibrant technique uses the power of the sun to expose detailed prints on surfaces. First, students will be introduced to the method of cyanotype on fabric by creating 3 small canvas patches. This will allow for experimentation with objects, exposure times, and composition (resulting in handmade patches you can take home to use later!). Students will then cyanotype onto a 15” x 16” cotton cloth tote bag for their final piece. The result of cyanotype is pure magic and one of a kind! Instructed by Janae Alyse of

On July 14th, learn the intricate art form of textile marbling! This historic art form involves the process of floating fabric paints on the surface of celluwater. The floating paints are then manipulated using various rake and swirl techniques to create a final design composition. Each student’s paint designs will then be transferred to a 72” x 14” blank silk scarf. Each scarf will have a unique color palette and design completely original to each maker! Instructed by Geraldine Johnson of Aspire Artisan Studios & Folk School.

We don’t entertain commissions too often, but when we do, we make them count.

Anita came to us with a well-loved wallet she’d received from her mother many years ago. The soft sheepskin leather was disintegrating, the button snap was broken, and we could clearly see this beloved piece was on its last leg.

Aspire was trusted to take apart her wallet, rebuild the pattern from scratch, and deliver this new piece to Anita in hopes we did her old wallet justice! We even reused the old zipper to give the new piece some memorable charm. 😊 We’re so grateful for being trusted to execute such a special project!

One of our biggest joys is offering accessible art that allows individuals of all ages to experience something new and out of the ordinary, regardless of ability, identity, or background.

We recently partnered with Minneapolis Institute of Art for their Family Day: Arts & Folk Crafts to bring a hands-on art experience to all. There were so many unforgettable moments, but one of our favorites was seeing individuals between the ages of 1 and 70 years old, pause, create, and engage in a hand-craft with the same enthusiasm across the board!

We are so excited to have shared this special day with MIA’s staff, volunteers, and everyone who participated in this event. ✨

Enjoy these studio shots of visitors making handmade clay beads (swipe to see infectious smiles)! 😊 Each set was so unique, and a true reflection of the individual makers.

We are so thrilled to announce our upcoming partnership! 📢 Aspire has been invited to join Minneapolis Institute of Art during their upcoming Family Day: Arts & Folk Crafts in helping visitors make their own handmade clay beads!

Visitors will form several beads using air dry clay, and take them home to dry, decorate, and string into a necklace, bracelet, or keychain. Discover the joy of working with clay while having fun, meeting new friends, and experiencing a handmade craft! 📿 This month’s Family Day theme is inspired by MIA’s Root Collection: Celebrating Studio Ceramics, so be sure to check out this amazing exhibit when you’re there! This event is free and open to the public.

🗓️ When: Sunday, September 10th, 2023

⏰ Time: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM

📍 Where: Minneapolis Institute of Art, 2400 Third Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55404

In our Shibori dyeing with indigo class, students learned a variety of ways to fold, twist, tie, and resist dye textiles while becoming familiar with two types of Shibori techniques: Itajime and kumo. Each textile turned out completely unique! And that magical feeling when revealing the pattern is just 🤌🏼🌀🥳

In our introductory Botanical Printing on Silk and Wool class, students learned how different techniques and mordants influence the colors produced using only leaves and flowers - no dyes needed! 🌼🌿🪻

Textiles were tightly bundled with plants and steamed, releasing naturally occurring tannins, pigments, and acids to create one-of-a-kind prints.

Next month, we are partnering with Mattie from .threads.studio for another great class: Botanical Printing with Indigo on Saturday, July 8th!
