I was playing with my little Remi mare today. I was asking her to be light off my legs and seat. When I replayed the video I realized something else. Look how tuned in she is. Ears listening, trying hard not to miss a cue. And she's content. No pinning ears no head tossing just honest and responsive.
Training the fundamentals is easy. Training the horse to want to try takes thought and consistency. Mostly it takes being present. Mind body and soul. Have you ever had a conversation with someone and they checked their phone or they're looking around the room or the interrupt you or they say Aha and they have no idea what you just said?
I see it everyday with riders on their horses they're asking for things but they're not present they're not paying attention to the things that really matter . Their not part of the conversation! I'm not saying my horses are perfect or that they don't have grumpy days but I will tell you for the most part they're happy to cooperate and they try hard. Take a few minutes next time you ride or better yet take a few minutes next time you're in a group of riders watch what the horses are telling everyone around them that nobody's bothering to listen to. Its a skill it must be learned and you must see the importance or you won't appreciate it.

Here is Toby. Ride 8. First lope in the big arena! Not bad! He is coming along so well. Im amazed at how quickly he's learning to listen to my cues. He already feels the changes in my body and leg position for different gaits. Next week I'll post some of the training I'm working on that help him control his 2 yr.old emotions! Lol. He tries so hard to comply but no matter how you frame it he is only 2!

The responsibility of becoming a better horseman ultimately falls on the individual.

Seek knowledge. Surround yourself with people who have spent their lives developing their understanding of the horse, and who are willing to share that knowledge. But understand that no teacher, clinician, or trainer can replace the effort you are willing to put into your own horses.

There is a difference between simply learning to ride a horse and dedicating yourself to becoming an artist in your horsemanship. That artistry is developed through countless hours of observation, experience, mistakes, reflection, and a genuine desire to understand more than just how to accomplish a movement.

It requires you to become deeply interested in the horse himself. How he feels, what he understands, what he has experienced, and what your approach to teaching him has meant to his confidence and willingness.

The further you pursue this knowledge, the more you begin to realize that the quality of your horsemanship cannot be measured solely by what you can get a horse to do, but by what the horse experiences in the process.

**Knowledge can be shared, but understanding must be earned.**

And ultimately, the depth of that understanding will depend on how much of yourself you are willing to dedicate to the horse.

I wanted to take a minute to say thank you to everyone who reached out with questions about yesterday's post. Im glad i stirred something in your soul that made you pause and reflect.
The owner of Salty is the kindest, sweetest human who loves her horses and dogs with all her heart. She wants the best for her horses and honestly works at it. No excuses she's always willing to take ownership if need be. She loves Salty. Her intentions are pure. She allowed some unwanted behavior for several reasons. 1. Simply wanting to do new things with a horse who's training didn't take him there. He needed a leader and his skill set and her skill set did not add up to training a horse who has limited exposure and no emotional control.
2. She went into self preservation mode without even knowing it. He would act up and she would retreat. Rightly so! It was the right choice. She then put him into training to try to understand what is causing him to not comply.
Honest, innocent. Yes! Not every horse that gets an attitude is because he is being mistreated. Quite the opposite. Many need leaders and when they don't understand something their insecurities come out. And they can come out in a number of ways. Salty became a bully. Underneath that is an insecure horse.
Remember my little Gypsy. Her previous trainer created anxiety and fight. ( She turned out amazing!) Not every situation is the same.
Horses are beautiful complicated creatures. To really appreciate and know them is a gift. I have 5 very different horses at the moment. They all bring something to the table and what a gift to be able to spend my day guiding horse and owner in their journey.
I am having so much fun unraveling the story of each one. The best part is that I have owners who care, owners willing to take the time to learn and create willing safe fun well educated horses.
I've always said if you own horses you better have a good sense of humor!
Here's to Salty and his owner for allowing me to share their journey. Im proud to call his owner my friend!

I love my clients! I am blessed beyond words. They work hard to be better horseman for their horses.
With that said they know I shoot straight. They also know I have their best interest at heart. Because of this they trust me to be honest and they know when I push them it's because I believe in them!
I just want to thank every client/friend who works with me, who trust me with their horses and who ride with me. You are why I do what i do!

This will be the last round Penning video of Salty. I just wanted to drive home that physical movement is only a piece of horse training.
Whether we like it or not we can add to or take away training with every interaction with our horses. Salty has learned to protect himself by turning off people. His physical movement is there but he is not mentally or emotionally connected.
Today was better. Not perfect but better. He is learning when im present im herd boss and yes it matters. At the very end he stepped toward me rather than a back up step which translates to if I need to leave im keeping that option open!
There's a difference between a horse thats an as***le (pardon my french) and a horse thats been taught to be an as***le. Read that again!
How i approach the training changes! Salty in my opinion doesn't want to be an ass. He has been taught to be. I am not at all saying that was the owners intent. Horses teach us constantly about how to be better humans. All we have to do is be ready to learn the lesson.
Im still learning im still growing and although I have confidence that im really good at what I do im also humble enough to know I have a lot to learn. Im sure not perfect and i dont have all the answers. Someone once said to me "trainer to trainer" we all have skeletons in our closet. I would argue that. Infact I'd say prove it because Im that sure I do not. I don't have one skeleton in my closet when it comes to dealing with / training horses.

When it comes to other people and relationships yep there's some skeletons but I promise you I stand for the horse 100% And I have my entire life and will continue to as long as the good lord allows.
I promise tomorrow we will be under saddle and working in the arena until then remember always stay humble and kind!

Mr. S UPDATE! This is day 3. Big changes. He actually tried today. Let me be clear. There's still a lot of work to be done. However he was quiet and respectful. He kept an ear and an eye on me. He tipped his head toward me. None of this happened before. He looked much calmer not so mad at the world.
Its the attention to the small details I want you to see and understand. Day 1 didn't even exist. I was simply an annoyance and he did not care to join the conversation. Day 2 he gave it his best shot to tell me in no uncertain terms I should go away.
His head always tilted away from me. No eye contact and the obvious body language!
I saw improvement today and rewarded it by releasing the pressure and allowing him to stand quietly while still engaged with me. What he didn't give up was protecting himself. Notice he always steps back a step or 2 when I approached. This is his way of saying if I need to leave I can and will.
Id like for him to willingly take a few steps forward.
I could go on and on but hopefully you're getting the idea. Super excited to see where this will go I will share more videos of him under saddle as well. I love to hear your thoughts. Have a blessed day always stay humble and kind!

I love performance horses. I love their athleticism and I love the intensity of striving for perfection. With that said I am drawn to the troubled horses and the ones labeled lazy or whatever it is that people want to dismiss them as. Not all but most simply need someone to understand what makes them tick. They wont always fit into a one size fits all "box" I admire and sometimes wish I could have tried my hand at going big time in the reining. I also know the commitment it takes and the many horses that I'd have to pass by because they don't fit the program and the need for immediate results. I applaud those that hold that position. I love the professionalism Every time I tried to go down that road I would find some "reiner flunky" or quirky imature c**t and immediately be drawn to them. We all have our calling. Apparently mine is developing a horse that others passed by. Not to say I haven't had the privilege of riding some crazy talented horses.
Below is Lilah she was a " lazy" reiner. She has truly flourished in my program and has become a superstar.
Remember anyone can teach the basics but fail to teach the mental and emotional side means you fail to teach the whole horse.
Im planning on teaching a few clinics in 2027. If your ready to try something a little different and challenge you and your horse beyond the basics I hope you will consider riding with me. If nothing else stop by for a visit!

I thought for today we would take a break from Mr. S and visit about this 2 yr old im starting. Super well bred Walla Walla Whiz from Amber McDowell . The owner wants a nice all around horse. Super athletic and talented.
He is showing great potential as an open caliber reiner. The video is ride 3! Not bad for a kid. Super smart super trainable! More as we progress!
This is officially my last c**t I'll start. God blessed me with this one .
