During the past three years, I’ve been training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and I’ve been surprised by how deeply it has impacted me — not just physically, but spiritually and mentally as well. I've been learning deeper humility, better patience and resilience, and how to remain more calm under pressure — qualities that serve both on the mat and in ministry.

I'd like to encourage you to consider Jiu-Jitsu training as a fun way to help you in life and ministry. No experience or athletic background is needed. I'm 61 and am preparing myself to age well. The goal isn’t competition — it’s fellowship, growth, and getting healthier together in a supportive environment while learning the art of self-defense.

Jiu-Jitsu gives its practitioners something rare: a safe space to be learners again, to laugh, to grapple, and to grow alongside a diverse group of people who carry their own life responsibilities and challenges. Our training practice has given both my wife, Joanne, and me increased physical fitness and mindfulness.

If you’ve ever been curious — or even if you’ve never thought about it before — I invite you to reach out to me (231-675-4452) and I'd be very happy to share more and hopefully get you connected to the right "third place" outside your church and home. As we say on the mat, "Keep it playful!"
