County issues burn ban
LYNN ADAMS SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

Sequoyah County Commissioners have issued a burn ban through August 26.

The commissioners, with counsel from the county’s municipal and rural fire chiefs, and relying on drought models from the National Weather Service, will review the current burn ban throughout the initial 14-day ban to determine if the ban should be extended.

Sequoyah County joins Le-Flore County as well as virtually the entire western portion of Arkansas in implementing burn bans.

According to the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture and Forestry, any person convicted of a violation of a county-issued burn ban shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and subject to a fine of not more than $500, imprisonment for up to one year or both.

Under a burn ban, it is against the law for any person to set fire to any forest, grass, range, crop or other wildlands. Campfires, burning trash and bonfires are also prohibited.

The normal rainfall for July is 3.80”. There has been no rainfall in the county for August, and the normal precipitation for the month is 3.70”.

Cemetery board seeks $60,000 to pave roads
AMIE CATO-REMER EDITOR

The Vian Garden of Memories Cemetery Board is working to make a long-requested improvement to the local cemetery by paving its internal roads.

Board members said the project is being pursued at the request of the public and would make the cemetery safer, more accessible and easier to navigate for families visiting loved ones.

The estimated cost of the project is around $60,000, and the volunteer board is seeking donations from the community to help fund the work. The board is also accepting bids from contractors interested in completing the paving project.

Early voting begins August 20 for Runoff Primary, Special Sallisaw Schools elections - Early voting begins Thursday, August 20, for voters in Sequoyah County. Voters who will not be able to make it to the polls on Election Day have the option of voting early at their County Election Board.
Sequoyah County Election Board Secretary Ruby Brunk said early voting is open to all voters.
“You do not need to provide an excuse to vote early. Oklahoma allows early voting for all elections conducted by the County Election Board—from school board and municipal elections to state and federal elections. This is a great option for those who will be out of town on Election Day or who want to avoid long lines,” Brunk said.
Early voting is available Thursday, Aug. 20, and Friday, Aug. 21, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 22, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sequoyah County Election Board, located at 110 E. Creek Ave. in Sallisaw.
Brunk reminds voters that early voting is not available at polling locations.
For questions, contact the Election Board at 918-775-2614 or [email protected].
