Stocking Strategies for Drought
Two Approaches for Cow/Calf Herds

1. Conservative Stocking:
Unchanged stocking rate the land can support even during drought.
Excess forage remains unused in normal & wet years.

2. Flexible stocking
Anticipate and follow annual forage production.
- Dry year (decreased stocking rate)
- Normal year (average stocking rate)
- Wet year (increased stocking rate)
Excess forage is used in normal & wet years.

Who to remove in dry years?
CALVES: Wean early to reduce forage needs of cows
OPEN COWS: Preg check early & cull unbred cows
HEIFERS: keep fewer replacement heifers

Who to add in normal and wet years?
CALVES: Retain weanlings to sell later
STOCKERS: Purchase & background yearlings
LEASE: Lease additional forage to another rancher

GUESS WHAT? If you are ready to stock your freezer for the fall, we will start our Blue & Gold Fundraiser on August 20th! This year there is a change to the chicken strips. they are fully cooked so you can pop them in the air fryer! More details to come next week! Fundraising forms will go out with students next week!

We have taken a great recipe and made it better. This year, when groups are taking orders for their Blue & Gold Sausage fundraiser, be sure to check out the revamped Chicken Tenders. They are now delivered fully cooked in a 2 1/2-pound package, instead of 5 pounds. Remember the pound change when placing your order. Easy for kiddos to throw in the air fryer as a convenient after-school snack.
