Givology at Binghamton University

Givology at Binghamton University Givology fundraises money to send underprivileged children in developing nations to school, donates school supplies, and promotes educational awareness.

General body meetings for the Spring 2015 semester are on Tuesdays at 7:30pm in UU 215! As a 100% volunteer-run organization, Binghamton’s Givology Chapter aggregates small dollar donations into textbook purchases and student sponsorships. "Give to Learn, Learn to Give" - every person has a responsibility to the world and has something powerful to offer. Even though you might be thousands of miles

away, you have an opportunity to change the life of a child and his or her community. Not only is education an essential human right, but also it breaks the cycles of poverty, improves health, and encourages economic growth. Since its launch in 2008, Givology raised more than $300,000 to 3,000 students in 26 countries. Givology desires to make the largest impact at the lowest cost. The organization received the Intelius Award for "Best Student-Run Social Enterprise", "Top Education Non-Profit" by GreatNonprofits, and "Technology in Education" prize by Education without Borders. Ravi Gupta, a Binghamton University Student, founded the group in the fall of 2003 after returning from a summer of teaching in Adidwan, Ghana. Throughout his teaching experience, he observed that almost none of the students in his village surpassed the junior high school level. Gupta made it his goal to change this. While in Ghana, he organized the village teachers to form a scholarship board and promised a few students scholarships. When he returned to America, he formed Atuu International, a New York State registered non-profit group, as well as Binghamton Students for Students International. Within two years, the dedicated members of B.S.S.I. raised enough money to send 35 students to high school. In 2005, Atuu International and B.S.S.I. merged with the Kapadia Education Foundation. The Kapadia Education Foundation, founded by Pradeep Kapadia, is a charitable organization, which enables underprivileged students in developing countries obtain a college education in their home countries. 100% of all financial contributions go towards the direct expenses of tuition, room, board and educational supplies for the sponsor’s student. The tuition of one year of college is merely $500. Typically, the students study with the goal of having a professional, scientific, or technical career. Along with raising funds, B.S.S.I members are able to directly communicate with the students they sponsor. Each Student Candidate pledges to write or email their sponsor at least once per month during their college career. They agree to freely ask their Sponsor for non-financial help such as advice or opinions related to college studies that may help them succeed in college. The sponsor gets the satisfaction of following their Sponsored Student's progress and growth. Since 2005, B.S.S.I sponsored 17 students. Working with Givology, Binghamton University students have the opportunity of applying for internships and fellowships. The internships provide you with hands-on non-profit experience, while a fellowship gives you a chance to travel abroad and interact with our students and families. Every dollar makes a difference!
