FIRST Robotics Team 2053 Southern Tier Robotics Southern Tier Robotics is a FIRST Robotics Team located in Vestal NY. (Previously Tigertronics) The team started in 2007 after Matt and Jeff overheard Mr.

The TigerTronics (Team 2053) competes in the First Robotics Challenge each year. and Mrs. D discussing the program one day. In 2021, the team moved schools and changed their name to Southern Tier Robotics

We work out of Vestal Senior High School in Vestal, NY but include team members from both Union-Endicott and Vestal.

We've started a new season of the Robotics Club. We've got a full list of activities. We're recruiting new members, some of whom will be coming from the African Road Middle School FIRST Lego Challenge club. So they'll have experience in building and competing robots. We'll be building portable cabinets to better organize the shop and take to competitions (anyone have spare plywood?). We'll be preparing to attend the off-season competition Rah Cha Cha Ruckus! at the
Nazareth University Golisano Training Center at Rochester. But first, we need to get the shop cleaned up and in shape for new season!

We're getting ready to start a new season! On Sept 2nd the high school had orientation for the incoming 9th graders. As part of the orientation the high school clubs set up in the gym. Lucas, Kayla, and Li'l Sebastian met with many of the 9th graders. Lucas and Kayla demonstrated Li'l Sebastian moving and shooting (but not too far). Several students that were part of Craig Mooers' Middle School FIRST Lego League Challenge club said they definitely want to take part in robotics. We're looking forward to welcoming them.

Li'l Sebastian was invited to participate in the Berkshire Blueberry & Book festival on July 18th. Lucas, Mason, Kayla, and Art took Li'l Sebastian to the festival held annually at the Berkshire Free Library. We set up in the Berkshire firehouse along with other vendors around us. There were many vendors scattered within the firehouse, community building, and lawn. We had some rain roll through a couple of times. But all in all it was a nice event. The blueberry ice cream we had at the end of the day was really good.

On Thursday, June 11th, the Vestal Middle School FIRST Lego League (FLL) Challenge Club visited the high school. We showed the middle schoolers, particularly the 8th graders that will be graduating into the 9th grade, what and how we build and compete in the FRC.

We thank Craig Mooers, the Vestal Middle School Technology Education teacher and Robotics Club Advisor, along with the club parents for bringing the students to the high school. And thanks to Sam, Mason, Lucas, Liam, Kayla, and Douglas for demonstrating Sebastian, showing the middle schoolers around the shop, and giving the middle schoolers a peek at what is in store for those we hope will join us in the Fall.

The robotics club held the end of year banquet to celebrate another year of building and competing in the FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC). The banquet was held on Thursday, June 4. Students, parents, teachers, and sponsors were invited to come and recognize the hard work, dedication, and accomplishments of the team.

The evening included dinner from Phil’s Chicken House, demonstration of Li’l Sebastian, and a chance for guests to get up close and talk about Li’l Sebastian with the students and mentors.

Andrew Beck started off the evening with a recap of the season. He started with the 2026 FRC kick-off back in January, described the performance through the two regional competitions, and the competition at the championship in Houston, Tx. It was a fun opportunity to look back on the season, thank everyone who helped make it possible, and celebrate the students who put in so much effort throughout the year. Art Law listed the resources needed to build and compete Li’l Sebastian. The team is grateful for the resources and support provided by our sponsors, individuals, and organizations and gave a big thank you for helping make the season possible.

We honored our graduating seniors with a memento from the championship competition. We will miss the knowledge and experience of the seniors. We wish them well as they move on to the next phase of their lives.

On Friday, June 29th, members of the STR went to the Kopernik Observatory & Science Center (https://www.kopernik.org/). At the Kopernik Observatory the students presented at the Friday Night Program. The presentation highlighted the activities of the club, this year's FIRST Robotics Competition, and demonstrated Li'l Sebastion. After the presentation a demonstration of Li'l Sebastian was held that showed how Sebastian loaded balls into the hopper and shot the balls into the hub (although Sebastian had to be very careful as there was limited height in the room). Afterwards the students answered questions from the audience. Thanks to Liam, Alex, Mason, Douglas, Andrew, and Art for taking time to support this annual event.
