What a beautiful way to begin a new school year! Today, our school community came together to celebrate our first Mass of the year, giving thanks for the blessings before us and asking God to guide our students, teachers, staff, and families in the months ahead.

May this year be filled with faith, friendship, growth, and many opportunities to share Christ’s love with one another. 💙✝️

St. Leo’s new principal wants to grow enrollment, support teachers, make learning fun for students

As Kelly Rowe begins her tenure as principal at St. Leo School, she wants to be a part of the community and let families know about the education being offered at St. Leo.
By incorporating prayer and being a Christian during the school day, Rowe said, “We can help (our students) deal with things through faith.”
“My goal at the end of the day,” she added, “is that we are good people, that our students are good people.”
St. Leo is a part of the Catholic Church, but “we welcome all students,” she said. “… We want to provide every student out there – regardless of faith – a wonderful education.”
Not all of the students and teachers at St. Leo are Catholic (she didn’t convert to Catholicism until five years ago), but teachers can incorporate faith into lessons about kindness, empathy and compassion, Rowe said.
She said St. Leo offers an educational option to parents – from its smaller class sizes to how technology is used in the classroom.
“We incorporate technology,” she said, “but we don’t teach with technology.” Instead, she said technology is used for research and to reinforce skills, “but we are not teaching through our devices. We are teaching person to person.”
Rowe views herself as a teacher’s principal. So don’t expect her to stay in her office. She likes being in classrooms so she can support her teachers to ensure students are getting the best education possible.
Having spent the first 16 years of her career in the Lexington Diocese at Seton Catholic School teaching, she said, “I’m not so removed that I don’t remember the trials and tribulations of being a teacher. But they are the rock stars of this school. The teachers are the heart of every school. And so my job is just to support them.”
She also embraces opportunities to interact with students because “if the kids don’t want to be here, then they’re not going to learn. So you have to have a little bit of sparkle and razzamatazz, so the kids want to come to school, they are excited about coming to school.”
In 2021, Rowe was hired as principal at Good Shepherd School, where she spent the last five years helping grow enrollment, while increasing parent involvement and community support, she said. The time had come for her to pass the baton to Good Shepherd’s next leader when she met with longtime St. Leo Principal Helena DiBiasie in the spring.
During their meeting, DiBiasie told her that the teachers and staff at St. Leo are amazing. Once Rowe met with them one-on-one, she realized, “They are. They are truly dedicated to St. Leo and to our students. And every decision that they make puts the students first. And that’s my philosophy.”
Coming to St. Leo gives Rowe another opportunity to help grow enrollment and community support, telling the Sun, “I always say, ‘Once you’re in the doors, you want to stay.’”
