I think after 40 years of flying, I have come to believe that there are two distinctive personalities within our pilot group.
One sits down to take a drink, looks over at another and sees if the glass of his fellow pilot is more filled than his own; the other, sees the glass is only half full and asks if he can make sure it is refilled so his peer has had enough.
Many years ago, and in a land far away, I ran into an Australian Airlines Captain in Cairns, before the domestic operation was merged into Qantas. I flew DeHavilland Beaver Amphibsâ from there for a short time to The Great Barrier Reef. He told me that they had a preference for hiring good flight instructors.
He said that successful captains and instructors had a genuine interest in the outcome of other people, that they could deal with the many personalities that our industry attracts and hold the standard for each student and first officer so that the next evaluation would be a good one when the time came.
He urged me to become an instructor, not because I would necessarily settle into airline flying, but because he saw something that he considered would be of benefit to my future students. He also told me that the attributes he spoke of would take time to develop fully.
Tolerance, patience, attention to detail and humility donât come easy to many 21 year olds .
I knew he was right.
He accepted my offer to buy him the next round.
I am not sure if I ever lived up to his vision of what I would become, but I am glad I listened and went down to Bankstown and later Dubbo, in New South Wales to do an Instructor Rating.
Itâs still the most fun and the most fulfilling experience, aside from flying air-ambulance for Childrenâs out of Pittsburgh, that I have had.
I realize for some, flight instruction seems a thankless task with low pay and a ton of responsibility, but I urge you to see what it offers you in return. Itâs much more than just a paycheck. Done properly, the benefits will last a lifetime and on into the next generation.
It will also set the proper framework for you to become an effective crew member on a large jet.
