Mike Block String Camp

Mike Block String Camp For string players of all ages, levels, and stylistic backgrounds, focusing on non-Classical MBSC is open to all ages, levels, and stylistic backgrounds.

World-class teachers provide instruction in multiple traditions, develop improvisational skills, and coach student bands in preparation for public performances. We maintain a low student-teacher ratio in group classes, which are divided by ability level, so that everyone learns in an environment of their peers. Creative work is done in smaller ensembles that perform their own arrangements at the end of camp.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Jonathan Cooper, a significant part of the Mike Block String Camp community and who was present in many of the participants’ and faculty members’ lives. Jonathan created our MBSC Daniel Pearl Memorial Violin, a beautiful instrument we have passed on each year since 2019 to support and encourage promising young musicians. Jonathan was also with us at MBSC 2013 as a luthier/presenter when we hosted a satellite camp in Maine. Here are some photos from that camp, as well as a fun costume party jam night from Valley of the Moon in 2010 (he is playing guitar, along with Mike on bass and Colin on fiddle). We send love to his family and anyone else affected by this loss. We hope to continue his legacy by continuing to share music and love in our communities. ❤

Day 3! This is always a big day at Mike Block String Camp because it's the day we break out into bands. Participants get to choose which tune they would like to arrange for the final concert and rehearse with those bands from this day on.
