Our tri-county (Fayette, Pickens, Lamar) poultry judging teams are practicing hard for the competition at the end of August! This meeting they learned how to judge carcasses, ready to cook poultry parts and more. I want to give a special thank you to our direct volunteer Amanda Knight for taking the lead teaching these 4-Hers all there is to know about poultry judging. Also a big thank you to Josh Knight for constructing this awesome stand for us to practice judging the carcasses. Our program wouldn’t be where it is today without amazing volunteers such as them! 🍀🍀🍀

What a great article, be sure to give it a read!

We are so proud of the Poultry Pioneers and honored to have Elizabeth Knight represent Lamar County. From a year of conducting research with Dr. Brigid McCrea to presenting their projects at the Poultry Science Association Conference in Toronto, Ontario, Canada! This is a perfect example of how 4-H has opened doors and prepared these young ladies for a future in the poultry science industry and beyond.

Four Alabama 4-H'ers took their poultry knowledge and passion to the next level as the first group of the one-of-a-kind research program, 4-H Poultry Pioneers! 🍀🐣

Over the last year, these high school students have been hard at work conducting research to benefit small flock owners. Working in pairs, the duos used the labs at the Department of Poultry Science at Auburn University to take samples and gather data. The project culminated in Toronto, Canada, at the Poultry Science Association annual meeting where they each presented their research project to poultry scientists from around the world!

Just like that our jam packed 4-H summer day camps have come to an end! Our programs included cooking lessons, insect investigators, terrarium planting, owl pellet dissection, fossil fun and egg art. We pride ourselves in providing a wide variety of 4-H programs over the summer for youth to participate in. We also try to spread our programming to all of our communities including Millport, Vernon and Sulligent. Stayed tuned for more 4-H opportunities this fall! 🍀🍀🍀

We had an EGGciting Egg Art Day Camp today led by our teen leader and egg art expert Elizabeth Knight. She taught participants how to draw flowers and other nature components while practicing shading. Then we dyed our eggs using a special Ukrainian egg dye. We finished up by scratching designs on the eggs and everyone was so pleased at the outcome of their artistic creations! 🍀🥚🎨

Our 4-H Fossil Fun activity at the Millport Public Library was a hit! The summer reading theme for the library this year is “Unearth a Story”. Participants had fun expressing creativity while using their critical thinking skills to color and assemble their own 3D T-Rex puzzle. As they were busy working away we also learned some fun facts about this infamous dinosaur. Everyone was proud of their hard work and got to take their creations home! 🦕⛏️🦖

07/15/2026

We still have a few spots open for our Egg Art Day Camp on July 21st from 10 to 12 at the Lamar County Extension Office. Come enjoy a morning of art, fun and friends!

Please call or text Sierra Barder at 205-712-7167 or call the Lamar County Extension Office at 205-695-7139 to register!🥚🎨🍀
