Ricker Math Tutoring and Consulting I am a Patient Math Tutor with real world business, classroom instruction, consulting and private tutoring experiences (see Photos for information).

As a patient and caring Math Tutor, I use all the skills and techniques I've acquired from a Masters in Instructional Technology, many years of classroom and personal tutoring, plus what's worked successfully for me in my business career. I believe that each student is different, learning differently and motivated differently. Therefore, what I've found is usually helpful is getting to know each i

ndividual's situation, especially in these three areas: 1) learning how to use key concepts, 2) having belief in oneself, and 3) figuring out what the teacher or test really is after. My education was at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, BS Management Engineering, and at the University of North Florida, Masters in Secondary Education focusing on Instructional Technology, and Math Certification in both FL and CT. My Tutoring Subjects include Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Algebra, Microsoft Excel and SAT preparation.

Planning for math tutoring

Since the Covid years (hopefully) are winding down, arranging for Math time starts!

Why Math?

Consider:
1) Not practicing newly acquired skills will allow for the knowledge to erode
2) Not practicing older acquired skills will expedite the knowledge erosion
3) Not having other course work allows for focused remedial work
4) Not having other course work allows for getting a jump on next year’s academic growth.

Math needs are the same per subject, whether the learner is
- advanced placement,
- over-age/under-educated,
o middle school and high school,
o Veterans, etc.

- but the instructional approach should be different. Differentiating the approach to each student’s situation addresses learning styles (do we not all have different learning styles, which, if catered to, maximize results?).

Also, a subtle but critical, issue during instruction is matching the substance and strategy of each teacher’s curriculum. This is clearly seen when comparing
- public vs. private schools,
- Blue Ribbon vs. state run district improvement plan curricula.

This means that it is critical to be very sensitive to the subtle differences in terminology, sequencing and pacing which each teacher and district tracks.

Now is the time to arrange for
 the appropriate educational scenario, starting with a precise understanding of the Math subject needs and goals, and the
 student’s learning style and knowledge base.
