John Powers Center John Powers Center is a public school for students in the Special Education District of Lake County.

The John Powers Center provides instructional and integrated services for students in two specialized SEDOL programs. Students in the Deaf or Hard of Hearing Program rely on sign language as their main mode of communication or use it to supplement their auditory and oral communication skills. Staff members in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program are proficient in sign language and classes are taug

ht using Conceptually Accurate Signed English and American Sign Language. In addition, many deaf and hard of hearing students require sign language interpreters to understand the spoken word in academic and social situations. The Language and Social Skills Opportunities (LASSO 1) Program provides services for students from kindergarten through eighth grades. The program provides a highly structured learning environment to meet individual needs in the areas of comprehension, pragmatics, social skills and sensory input. Students generally referred for this program require a small, structured academic setting with opportunities for supported integration into regular education classes. Instruction within the program focuses on a systematic approach to social skills instruction, social communication skills, organizational skills, self-regulation, understanding social behaviors, and academics. Social skills instruction is based primarily on Michelle Winner’s Social Thinking Curriculum. Instruction in these areas is integrated throughout the school day. Students in both programs are integrated into nearby Hawthorn District 73 schools. Students are placed at the John Powers Center by the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) Team. Transition Students: Important message from SEDOL

Due to the upcoming inclement weather, SEDOL campus programs will be remote on Tuesday, January 26,2021. The following SEDOL schools and buildings will be closed, but students and staff will still be in attendance via remote instruction: Cyd Lash Academy including SEDOL Vocational Services, Gages Lake School, Laremont, Fairhaven, the SEDOL Administrative Building including Project SEARCH, Transition at Seymour, Transition at John Powers Center, and Regional Safe School in Zion. All staff is expected to work remotely except the SEDOL Operations Department. SEDOL Operations Department will report per the directions of the Director of the Buildings and Grounds on January 26, 2021. As a reminder Wednesday, January 27, 2021 will be remote for deep cleaning. We will welcome everyone back on the SEDOL campus on Thursday, January 28, 2021.

Sector Programs, South School, and the DHH Programs should follow their host school/districts decisions regarding in person or remote learning and staff expectations.

National School Lunch Program (NSLP) Reminder:

For August 20 & 21, meals did not have to be ordered online. Students and families can go directly to Zion Elementary, 2800B 29th Street, Zion IL from 10 - 11 am today to pickup meals. Meals are free or reduced for those that qualify in the program, for others you will be billed monthly by SEDOL. Meals are available in 1, 3 or 5 packs. Prices for full and reduced meals are below.

The ordering period for next week is closed, but the order form for the week of 8/31 - 9/4 will be opened up at NOON today.

SEDOL is excited to welcome Paul Gorski of the Equity Literacy Institute during the SEDOL Institute Days. SEDOL staff participating in the SEDOL Institute Days and Remote Planning Day will be in session virtually without students on 8/13, 8/14, 8/17, 8/18. All staff will attend these sessions virtually.
