Today was a special day at Maeser Elementary! We celebrated our selection as a Utah 2034 Champion School with three inspiring guests who shared their Olympic and Paralympic journeys with our students.
Two-time Olympic speedskating medalist Ethan Cepuran showed us the bronze medal he won in Beijing 2022 and the silver medal from Milano Cortina 2026. U.S. Climbing Paralympic hopeful Daliya Hansen talked about the hours of hard work she's putting in to make the 2028 U.S. Paralympic Team for the Los Angeles Games. And Utah 2034 Education Committee chair Amy Garff shared her experience running with the Olympic torch during the lead up to the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Our Opening Ceremony is part of Champion Schools 34, a statewide education program developed through the Utah 2034 Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. An extension of the Ken Garff for Good Literacy Initiative, the program brings Olympic and Paralympic values into Utah elementary schools through lesson plans, book recommendations, motivational videos with elite athletes, and reading challenges that help students explore Olympic themes both inside and outside the classroom.
The inaugural pilot is launching this fall in 72 elementary schools across seven school districts: Salt Lake City, Cache County, Granite, Iron County, North Sanpete, Duchesne County, and Uintah County. Each month, our school will focus on a different Olympic value as we build toward the Winter Games in 2034.
It was an inspiring afternoon that showed our students what dedication, perseverance, and Olympic spirit look like.
