Recital Time and Stage Fright

My studio recently put on our Fall Recital. When the week of the recital finally arrives, I invariably recall my first recital. It was held in the basement of my church. I still have the photograph of myself, standing beside my piano teacher soberly receiving a certificate of participation. I was in the first grade.

Five reasons to have a recital:
- To overcome stage fright.
- To receive recognition for hard work.
- To see other’s perform.
- Preparation for recitals is different than other types so
students work harder to master their recital pieces.
- Recitals are memorable.

Two of the reasons to have a recital in the list above stick out for me. The first and the last. The reason the first one sticks out is when I was in the first grade I didn’t know stage fright existed. Until my older brother asked me if I was scared to play the piano in front of all those people. 😳 So I experienced stage fright and that was what made it memorable. I didn’t get over stage fright until I became an adult. Thanks brother who shall remain unnamed. 😉

Currently, I have students that choose not to take part in the recital and that is perfectly fine. Months before the recital parents are given the opportunity to talk over the option of participation or opting out. Some students if forced to participate become stressed and dread the upcoming performance. Their anxiety over performing takes all of the fun out of playing their instrument or singing. We never want that to happen!

I work to provide students with plenty of tools to help them prepare to perform in front of a live audience. My goal is for them to have fun and enjoy the process. Then with a fun experience under their belt they will look for opportunities to perform for relatives & friends, at church and school.

We had our Fall Recital on the last weekend before Thanksgiving. These snapshots are what was taken during and after the recital. Parents, friends and family had such a great time, listening to the musical pieces that were chosen for the Recital.

I want to thank all of my students for all of the hard work that went into preparing for the Recital. They all performed wonderfully and I’m so proud of them!

Trust: Why it’s so important in the Music Teacher/Student relationship

Recently I began working with a brand new vocal student. During the first session it was really apparent that I would have to work very hard to create rapport and trust with her.

It’s not for the reasons that you might think. You might think the student was shy, hungry, tired, or possibly wasn’t really into taking Voice Lessons.

Beginning voice lessons are different than other music lessons and here is why; Let’s pretend that you are a new student in music lessons. This is your first session and you want to learn to sing. You walk into the Music Studio and the first thing your new Vocal Coach asks you to do is sing. Many beginning musicians that I’ve interviewed and who’ve had this experience have said it’s unnerving at best, petrifying at worst.

For those of you who are reading this post who are not vocalists, it’s terrifying because your voice is the instrument you’re presenting. And nine times out of ten this leaves you feeling vulnerable. It is different than guitar, piano or trumpet because if you’re a beginner and you play your guitar for the first time and it sounds awful it’s not you making that terrible noise. It’s the guitar.

Most often the goals for a new vocal student are to learn to sing on pitch and develop good tone and texture, all while expanding their range.

Some are born with fabulous natural abilities to already have great pitch, tone, texture and a large range. These gifted vocalists are the minority. Most budding vocalists have to work very hard at this. And results don’t happen overnight.

Here’s where the Vocal Coach comes in; by providing the student with exercises and beginner songs that allow the student to experience some successes early in the training. This starts to establish Trust between Student and Teacher. The Teacher can then build on that Trust and push the Student to do more bold exercises.

The bottom line for growth and success is this: If the Student trusts the Vocal Coach enough to apply the recommendations that the Vocal Coach is making for the student, courageous enough to be vulnerable and sometimes sound really bad and accepts that it takes hard work, dedication and trust in themselves to grow then they can accomplish great things!
