Sometimes when kids struggle with spelling, it’s not because they don’t know the letters… it’s because they aren’t hearing all the sounds in the word.

One simple trick I use in lessons:

Have your child draw a line (or a box) for each sound they hear in a word before they try to spell it.

For example, the word *ship* has 3 sounds:
/ sh / / i / / p /
So they would draw 3 lines or boxes first.

This helps them slow down, notice every sound, and match each sound to a letter (or letter team).

It’s a small shift, but it can make a big difference 🤍

Just a reminder:
Kids read at different ages.

Early doesn’t mean smarter.
Later doesn’t mean incapable.

Brains develop differently. Confidence grows differently.

If your child is taking longer, that doesn’t mean something is wrong it just means their path looks different. And different is okay!

One of the hardest things for a parent to watch is their child start believing they “just aren’t good at school.”

Struggling readers are often bright, capable kids who simply haven’t been taught in the way their brain needs.
