Located in the Warren M. Lee Center for Fine Art

The Voices in tbe Blood Series are considered to be one of Colleen’s most important series of work. The series of 17 paintings, painted between 1987-1990 tell the Lakota creation story through the artist’s interpretation of blood knowledge. The stories told include the creation of the earth, jow the Lakota became the Lakota and how their ceremonies snd spiritual practices came to be. Throught a chronological series of paintings, each story is a world building and builds off the next.

Early Figurative Works (1977-1989)

“Cutschall’s early figurative paintings were based on photographs of her family and frownds. From her great grandmother, ‘Lizzie Glode Sherman’ (1978), her great uncle and aunt ‘Henry and
Annie Standing Bear’ (c. 1980) to a portrait of her daughter ‘Starlight Larvie’ (1984). Included in thie exhibition, portraits of her friend ‘Arthur Amiotte’ (1989) and a friend’s relatives ftom Grand Ronde, Oregon ‘Annie and Coquille Nellie (1979). We see the emergence of her signature wuill psi ting style in ‘Pipe Bag #4’ (1980), ‘Native American Church Singers’ (1985) and ‘Helping Hand Road’ (1991). Conceptually, Colleen explores sacred time and space, in both these earlier figurative works and in her next important series of paintings, ‘Voice in the Blood’”. -Dr. Stacey Koosel, Curator
