Today, August 8, is the "birthday of physicist Ernest O. Lawrence, born in Canton, South Dakota (1901).
Lawrence attended USD, working his way through college, and going on for graduate degrees from the University of Minnesota and Yale. He accepted a position at the University of California, Berkeley . . . where he invented a machine that he called a "proton merry-go-round," better known as the cyclotron . . . a machine that could accelerate particles and then hurl them at atoms to smash the atoms open. This allowed scientists to discover radioactive isotopes of elements (as well as) new elements. Lawrence was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1940." In 2019, the Department of Communication Studies began a program in Science Communication, recognizing that the work of scientists must be translated to educate, empower, and enrich the communities and societies in which we all live.
